Our Facilites

Macclesfield, Cheshire

Macclesfield, Cheshire

Our 101-acre campus at Macclesfield in the heart of the Cheshire countryside is a hub for innovative science and technology. It’s focused on the design and development of innovative products and manufacturing processes that enable progression of clinical studies and, ultimately, the delivery of commercial manufacturing processes and products that impact the lives of millions of patients.

The campus is home to Pharmaceutical Sciences and our largest Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PTD) team, and is the only AstraZeneca site with chemical development capabilities. R&D activities here span the whole of AstraZeneca’s development and commercial portfolio, creating pioneering ways to bring life-changing medicines to patients.

Macclesfield is also our biggest pharmaceutical manufacturing site in the UK, producing more than 50 different medicines for the global market, and is the base for our second largest global IT hub. This makes it a unique environment, where development scientists, technology specialists and manufacturing work closely together, supported by teams in quality assurance, procurement, logistics, legal, HR and finance.

The Macclesfield site also houses our global quality, supply chain and strategy, and external sourcing teams.

Speke, Liverpool

Speke, Liverpool

Our biologics site at Speke, Liverpool is a unique place that brings together research scientists, manufacturing associates, engineers, quality professionals and support personnel. Flu is a killer – and we work as one relatively small team to deliver a vaccine that tackles each year’s particular flu strain or mutation.

Over the last few years, around £75m has been invested to bring all aspects of vaccine strain development and manufacture together in Liverpool and increase production. We now have the facilities to research, develop, produce and distribute up to 20m vaccine doses a year for the global market. In the UK, our bulk-manufacturing capabilities enable us to supply the nasal spray influenza vaccine Fluenz as an important part of the Government’s extended childhood flu vaccination programme.

Alderley Park, Cheshire

Alderley Park, Cheshire

Over 60 years, our teams at Alderley Park developed more than 25 new medicines to treat serious illnesses. Their innovations have helped fight breast, prostate and lung cancer, aid anaesthesia, combat bacterial infections, and reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol.

We remain a tenant at Alderley Park, as the state-of-the-art labs and research facilities which sparked so many medical breakthroughs develop into a major biohub and springboard for a raft of companies. Many of these are exciting new ventures that will spearhead the future of medicine and scientific discovery; others are CROs, service companies or mature pharmaceutical companies.
