Using data science to develop new medicines

There are many ways that you can apply your skills and experience in data science to support our efforts to develop new medicines. We are creating and applying data science tools throughout all stages of the drug development process.

For example, data science may be used to help:

• Reveal patterns in disease and health data that could lead to new therapies
• Identify molecules that could be the target for developing new medicines
• Design and optimise novel therapeutic molecules
• Predict the potential outcomes of clinical and pre-clinical studies
• Assess the safety and efficacy of novel therapies
• Find groups of patients most likely to benefit from particular treatments
• And much, much more…

All of which contributes to developing new medicines faster, more efficiently and with greater potential benefits for patients.

Why be a data science postdoc?

AstraZeneca has many different roles available for talented data scientists. Our postdoc roles are an ideal way to explore working in the pharma industry while also building your academic credentials. Postdoc projects are designed to provide rich opportunities for collaboration, and to produce results that can be shared through top-tier conference presentations and high-impact research publications.

Working as a postdoc is also an excellent opportunity to independently lead your own research project that is independent of our drug pipeline and that is supported by experts in the field. This provides an outstanding learning experience.

Ideal candidates for postdoc roles have a natural curiosity, strong technical skills and a strong belief in the power of what science can do. They are innovators, who challenge established thinking and push the boundaries of science. Our postdoc positions are particularly well suited to those with 0-4 years of experience post-PhD.
