Business Unit Director: Oncology (OBUD)

The Oncology Business Unit Director (OBUD) will lead the strategy development and tactics execution of the Oncology Business Unit in the CAMCAR Cluster.
The OBUD is instrumental in positioning AstraZeneca as a leader in oncology in the Cluster, and is accountable for setting the strategic vision, defining and implementing the business unit’s strategy, coordinating cross-functional and brand-level operational plans, and leading the commercial team to deliver optimal outcomes for patients who can benefit from AstraZeneca’s innovative oncology therapies.
As a member of the Marketing Company Senior Management Team (SMT), the OBUD shares responsibility for the overall leadership, strategic direction, business development, and compliance activities within the local market.
The OBUD has direct accountability for the performance and success of the Oncology Marketing and Sales teams within the country, driving launch excellence, competitive performance, effective financial management (P&L), and close collaboration across above-market and local cross-functional teams. The OBUD will champion AstraZeneca’s values by fostering a culture of scientific leadership and patient-centricity, and by contributing to the company’s vision of being a “Great Place to Work”.
Additionally, the OBUD is responsible for ensuring that all oncology-related activities within the market are fully compliant, aligned with global strategies, and appropriately endorsed by relevant stakeholders
Position should be based in Costa Rica or be willing to relocate.
Responsibilities
- Leverage a deep understanding of the local oncology ecosystem, patient journeys, and payor needs to define and build an effective Oncology Business Unit. This position inspires the team to embrace patient and customer insights, driving innovation both within their roles and across AstraZeneca to ensure the delivery of breakthrough oncology medicines.
- Translate the global long-term vision for AZ Oncology into robust country-level plans based on local actionable insights that define and deliver value across various stakeholder groups.
- Deliver on our ambitious sales and profitability targets by driving operational execution excellence, while setting the foundation for future launches in order to achieve our bold 2030 ambition in oncology.
- Shape AstraZeneca’s Oncology direction in the Cluster, ensuring that local critical success factors and ecosystem shaping are fully supported.
- Ensure that all oncology launches, and line extensions are expertly planned for, resourced, and managed for success.
- Implement and monitor innovative, cross-functional account planning and customer engagement strategies in Oncology.
- Establish and maintain strong external relationships within the oncology community, including healthcare professionals and, through parter functions, payors and patient groups.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree would be an asset
- Fluent in English
Required Experience
- 5+ years of pharmaceutical industry experience in oncology at a strategic leadership level with proven track record of delivering results in oncology sales and marketing
- University degree-level qualification in related field; Science or medicine university degree is preferred
- Advance degree in management (MBA or similar) highly desirable
- Demonstrated experience in building high-performancing, cross-functional business units will be valued
- Demonstrated sucess in multi-product, multi-indication oncology launches in a multi-country enviroment
- Demonstrated in-depth understanding of account planning, Oncology Customer Engagement programme and processes
- Comprehensive disease knowledge and expertise. Knowledge of local and international oncology opinion leaders. Previous local experience in Oncology medical positions a plus
- In-depth understanding of CAMCAR’s specialty Oncology healthcare and payer ecosystem. Previous local experience in market access positions a plus
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop cross-functional teams, with a deep understanding of the oncology patient experience from diagnosis through to ongoing care in CAMCAR markets.
