The Translational Medicine function within Oncology R&D is dedicated to ensuring effective and strategic biomarker studies for oncology project teams. As part of this function, the Global Genomics team leverages Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and other advanced technologies to match the right patient to the right drug, supporting precision oncology approaches for the AstraZeneca Oncology pipeline. We are seeking a Senior Scientist in Translational Genomics to join our team and contribute to our mission of transforming cancer treatment.
Accountabilities:
- Perform work in a genomics lab, including planning, designing, and executing experimental work, and documenting and communicating results to appropriate partners.
- Deliver genomic information to AZ project teams and other partners using NGS and other leading-edge technologies, as well as focused informatic analyses when needed.
- Develop and maintain internal genomics lab capability with a focus on DNA/RNA purification/quantification/QC, gene enrichment, library construction through DNA sequencing (Illumina NovaSeq), and laboratory automation development.
- Involve in data analysis/QC, troubleshooting, interpretation of results, and communication back to project teams.
- Conceptualize, develop, and execute evaluations of platforms, vendors, and emerging technologies of clinical and translational utility.
- Provide technical advice and genomic/biomarker consultation to internal and external partners.
- Deliver biomarker assays and genomic/molecular profiling datasets using sample management software, a LIMS system, Jira, electronic lab notebooks, and written project reports.
- Work effectively with Translational Medicine Leads to consult on technologies, set expectations and timelines, develop project biomarker plans, and use fit-for-purpose platforms and technical approaches.
- Be accountable for high-quality biomarker data generation, validation, and results/report delivery in a timely manner.
- Lead lab-based biomarker identification focused on project needs to deliver clinically qualified biomarkers.
- Identify exploratory biomarkers relevant for drug response/resistance, patient stratification, and disease progression.
- Ensure that all nominated biomarkers are fit for purpose in the clinical environment.
- Collaborate with diagnostic, clinical, and regulatory partners to develop companion diagnostics.
- Maintain appropriate documentation for biomarker work, comply with internal and external requirements, assist in preparation of regulatory documents, and participate in external presentation of results and peer-reviewed journal publications.
- Leverage external partners for high-throughput sequencing, technology development, and other advanced genetics/genomics approaches.
Essential Skills/Experience:
- BS in relevant scientific subject area with 3 to 5 years related expereince
- Experience with Next Generation Sequencing is required
- Experience working with clinical oncology samples is required
- Experience with Beckman i7 robotic platforms including programming of new scripts and troubleshooting script errors are required
- Experience with python, bio-turing and other informatic software packages
- Strong laboratory and analytical skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with clear documentation of work performed and ability to describe and understand its importance
- Excellent problem-solving skills with clear understanding of the balance of innovation, smart risks, and project delivery
- Strong organizational and planning skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to multi-task project work
Desirable Skills/Experience:
- Relevant industry experience is a plus

The annual base pay (or hourly rate of compensation) for this position ranges from $108,757 to $161,136. Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, our positions offer a short-term incentive bonus opportunity; eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program (salaried roles), to receive a retirement contribution (hourly roles), and commission payment eligibility (sales roles). Benefits offered included a qualified retirement program [401(k) plan]; paid vacation and holidays; paid leaves; and, health benefits including medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans.
