Job Title: Lead Consultant - Full Stack Engineer

In Early Science, we empower our scientists to perform at their peak by combining cutting-edge science with leading digital technology platforms and data. As a Lead Consultant - Full Stack Engineer, you'll work alongside Software and Data Engineers, Architects, Analysts, and other IT and science partners to devise technical solutions that tackle some of the most challenging issues slowing down innovation. Your work will have a direct impact on the science we do, enabling our scientists to undertake research not possible today. Are you prepared to make the impossible possible?

Accountabilities:

In this role, you will join a distributed team of software engineers, support engineers, and informaticians in our Augmented DMTA platform. You will design and implement software-based solutions to streamline scientific processes, enhance learning, and deliver faster and higher quality across all therapeutic modalities. You will ensure standard methodologies are followed in software development, bridging the gap between legacy systems and ground breaking technology.

Your ideas will become invaluable tools in supporting scientific endeavors. You will be responsible for the end-to-end implementation of new applications, using expertise in surrounding technologies like cloud platforms, libraries, frameworks, etc. Collaborate with solution and IT architects to reach consensus on optimal solutions for given problems. Work with project teams to integrate new software with existing systems, making impactful suggestions that shape the platform itself.

Provide feedback into the technical direction of the platform, ensuring DMTA scientists have the tools and technology needed to work efficiently and accurately in a rapidly changing scientific environment. Advocate for modern, agile software development practices and help develop a vibrant software engineering culture. Support junior software engineers through mentoring, feedback, and hands-on career development.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • 8+ years and deep expertise in languages like (but not limited to) Java, with the willingness and ability to quickly ramp up on new ones as the need arises

  • 5+ years experience in some kind of scripting language like Python, Ruby, shell, etc

  • Experience in at least one major web development or microservices framework, like Spring or Quarkus

  • 5+ years with strong front end skills using JavaScript and several years’ experience in a front end framework like Vue.js, React, or Angular.

  • Additional front end skills in CSS as well as some related CSS framework like Bootstrap, MUI, or TailwindCSS

  • Several years’ experience relational and/or NoSQL databases (bonus points for Oracle, Postgres, MongoDB and/or Cassandra)

  • Proficiency in *nix environments

  • Demonstrable high proficiency in data structures and design patterns, as well as associated antipatterns. Be able to defend, compare, and contrast these decisions

  • Experience in cloud services and tools (e.g. AWS services such as S3, Redshift, lambda, DMS)

  • Excellent unit testing practices using proper software architectures to make those tests possible

  • CI/CD experience with some automation tooling like Jenkins, GithubActions, TravisCI, etc

  • Experience of in data analysis – profiling, investigating, interpreting and documenting data structures,

  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow standards while contributing to the evolution of standards themselves

  • Excellent teamworking skills

  • Hands-on technical leadership skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

  • A critical thinking attitude and the ability to propose solutions, not just highlight problems

  • The desire to engineer rather than just write code, no “ticking checkboxes”

  • An always learning, never complacent attitude when it comes to what you do best

  • Be able to pick the right tool for the job

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Experience with Docker and other tooling for dev environments

  • Experience in microservices

  • Experience with message queuing (RabbitMQ, SQS, etc)

  • Experience with CM tools like Ansible, Chef, etc

  • Strong willingness to teach and educate peers and beyond on what you do and how you do it
