The Discovery Centre, Cambridge Biomedical Campus, UK

Competitive salary and benefits

Introduction to role:

Are you ready to make a significant impact in the world of genome-editing medicine? AstraZeneca is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join our dynamic team of scientists, dedicated to advancing our knowledge of genome editing and its applications. This role offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in groundbreaking research, collaborate with international experts, and contribute to the development of novel therapeutics for patients worldwide. If you have expertise in genomics or transcriptomics and a passion for precision genomic medicine, we invite you to apply.

Accountabilities:

AZ has been rapidly expanding its genome-editing medicine portfolio, with the aim to treat and hopefully in the future, permanently cure diseases across diverse therapeutic areas. Since our partnership with Alexion, a strong focus has also been on developing treatments for rare diseases. We have been making large strides in all aspects of CRISPR medicine development, be it the development of novel genome editors or delivery systems and we aim to bring these novel therapeutics to patients at the earliest. But we want to ensure that these new therapies are safe for patients.

You will help us understand the safety of CRISPR medicines by leveraging cutting-edge technologies. You will get the opportunity to immerse yourself in this bustling fast-paced ecosystem of ground breaking research. You will also get to collaborate with international external experts and institutions in the field.

Your research has the potential to create new opportunities for AZ’s genome-editing-based medicines, and will help bring the next generation of therapeutics to patients worldwide suffering from untreatable diseases.

You will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team of scientists who are dedicated to advancing our knowledge of genome editing and its applications. AZ has a very strong therapeutic genome engineering program with world-class scientists and resources. We work on everything from developing novel Cas proteins to novel delivery modalities. We are entrepreneurial and agile and continuously develop and adapt new characterization methods. Your work in this position will be truly ground breaking with the opportunity to publish in high-impact journals. You will get to work with genome editing programs at AstraZeneca and National Institute of Standards and Technology (Gaithersburg, MD, USA). Your academic supervisor will be Samantha Maragh, leader of NIST’s Genome editing program. You will get to lead the project with support from both of your supervisors.

Crucial Skills/Experience:

  • Extensive laboratory experience in molecular biology, preferably genomics and/or transcriptomics, NGS

  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with diverse sequencing techniques

  • Experience in designing and optimizing genomics/transcriptomics/molecular biology assays

  • Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve experimental issues

  • Effective communication skills within multi-disciplinary and diverse teams

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Experience in sequencing data analysis and working knowledge of R or Python

  • Understanding of statistics, data visualization, and quality assessment of NGS data

  • Familiarity with genome engineering using CRISPR-Cas9
