Sr. Government Affairs Manager

We are seeking a visionary Senior Government Affairs Manager to lead the GA & policy functions and will be accountable for leading the Rare Diseases area. All in terms of development and implementation of GA and public policy strategies. You will shape and influence the political and socio-economic policy environment by driving AstraZeneca strategies forward on key corporate and therapy area priorities, increase AZ’s profile by engaging externally working closely within AZ Cross Functional Team (CFT).

This is a strategic role managing corporate and therapy areas, reporting and providing strategic advice to the Corporate Affairs Director and the CFT in order to shape the policy environment in which AstraZeneca operates, working to ensure strategic alignment and pull-through of proactive and reactive public policy shaping opportunities in the mentioned areas, including affordable access to innovation, health technology assessment evolution, regulatory environment, and disease-level policy to support therapy.

You will develop and implement strategies and campaigns to proactively shape the business environment, also will participate with the trade associations and actively engage with government officials and public institutions. You will also work collaboratively, as needed, with the CFT, Regional and Global, Medical, Market Access, Compliance, Regulatory, Legal, and Commercial teams to coordinate programs and activities.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong blend of leadership capabilities, strategic planning, deep knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and Patient Advocacy Groups/ Civil Social Groups related with Rare Diseases (at least 5 years), stakeholder engagement expertise, and strong oral and written communications skills to collaborate and engage with others in support of the AZ business.

The role will develop at the offices and in the field with Civil society, public servants and within related institutions and key stakeholders.

Accountabilities:

  • Strategic Development & Leadership:Design, lead, and oversee the implementation of corporate and rare disease policy strategies aimed at advancing AstraZeneca’s agenda in alignment with key therapeutic areas across public, social, and private sectors.
  • Advisory & Collaborative Support:Provide strategic counsel and build organizational capabilities while collaborating closely with the Cross Functional Team (CFT) to develop and execute comprehensive Government Affairs (GA) and policy plans, partnering with external stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Engagement & Alignment:Ensure clear engagement and alignment on GA and policy matters within the organization. Develop toolkits, supporting materials, and guidance to facilitate implementation alongside the CFT and external agencies.
  • Position Advancement:Develop and enhance AstraZeneca’s GA-policy positions on corporate priority themes and critical therapy areas, ensuring robust advocacy on behalf of the organization.
  • Industry Participation:Actively participate in local trade and industry associations’ GA and policy working groups to ensure AstraZeneca is effectively represented and contributes meaningfully to public policy development on critical issues.
  • Strategic Resource:Provide strategic counsel and serve as a resource for the Corporate Affairs/Government Affairs Director on key issues, preparing positions and briefs for senior leadership meetings.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:Collaborate with Corporate Affairs and broader organizational units to foster relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), Key Decision Makers (KDMs), Patient Advocacy Groups (PAGs), public institutions, and government officials across Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches.
  • Relationship Building:Cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with influential healthcare thought leaders and stakeholders to bolster AstraZeneca’s presence and influence in the healthcare landscape.

Essential

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree  in a field related to Government Affairs (Political Science, law, International Relations, Economics, Communications).
  • Deep understanding of the pharmaceutical industry in Rare Diseases and the policy issues impacting the Mexican healthcare system.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in government affairs, public affairs, policy shaping. With at least 5 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry and familiarity with the Mexican healthcare system.
  • Proven success in implementing government (policy and advocacy initiatives).
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across functional teams.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish.
