Our Medical Affairs Manager for Respiratory and Immunology portfolio is a hybrid (office/field) position who is an individual contributor and is responsible for enhanced patient outcomes and the safe and effective use of AstraZeneca medicines with prioritization, according to company strategy and organizational impact. Ensure excellence in execution, leveraging innovations wherever appropriate, of the local Medical Affairs strategic plans and its execution in the field, composed of confidence and evidence generation activities. Have a deep understanding of the local healthcare system, its priorities, and challenges and develops an Integrated Engagement plan to gather insights and drive fundamental and sustainable clinical practice transformations in alignment with the Medical Affairs strategy and the company’s portfolio that strengthen healthcare ecosystems, improve treatment outcomes, that enable patient access to quality care.

You will develop the local Medical Plan and contribute to the local business strategic and operational planning for defined therapy area. You will also develop and deliver pre-launch and post-launch medical plans and activities.

Ensures that all local medical requirements are met for all brand/TA material and will also use medical expertise to contribute to the marketing direction of the brand/TA. Will be recognized as a medical expert within the marketing company and will often guide and mentor other junior Medical Affairs colleagues.

Leads in the delivery of operational excellence, impact, and efficiencies through measurable outcomes and a continuous improvement approach. Communicate on the quality delivery and value of the Medical Affairs team with good understanding of the internal business ecosystem (strategy, model, finances) and act as a key member of the local Medical Affairs team that contributes to the planning and execution of Medical Affairs strategies, working closely with the local medical and cross-functional teams.

Accountabilities:

Medical strategy and clinical input

  • Drive Medically led/co-led, based initiatives, on an identified gap in collaboration with CFTs, that contributes to an overarching plan mapped to drive positive patient outcomes.

  • Leverage medical expertise to design, implement, and oversee real-world evidence (RWE) projects. Identifies reliable suitable data sources and ensure the scientific rigor and integrity of real-world studies.

  • Responsible for interpreting and communicating the findings from RWE projects with a strong focus on translating RWE into actionable insights that can internally inform medical and commercial strategies and externally ultimately improve patient outcomes and inform healthcare decision-making.

  • Establish AstraZeneca as a scientific leader through proactive medical inputs.

  • Lead educational initiatives, developing clinical support tools, and providing scientific expertise to support the integration of new medical advancements into clinical practice.

  • Puts in place measures to showcase the impact of initiatives.

  • Agile adoption of innovation through win-win partnerships within the healthcare ecosystem that are scalable and can enable sustainable patient outcomes.

  • Provide the AZ internal stakeholders with an understanding of the local medical community, clinical practice, trends and real or perceived gaps in current scientific knowledge and medical treatment, competitive intelligence

  • Collaborate with KEEs on study proposals (ESR), AZ Study and/or publications of interest to AstraZeneca.

Strategic Planning and Delivery:

  • Plan and work with medical affairs team to ensure the Field Medical Strategic Plan (FMSP) and Field Medical activities are prioritized and aligned with the Medical Affairs Strategic Plans.

  • Ensure the Field Medical Plan includes an Integrated Engagement plan with an appropriate ratio of traditional and non-traditional stakeholders.

  • Work closely with the Medical Affairs Team and cross functional team to provide input to medical and product strategies.

  • Drives prioritization of activities across the team to ensure appropriate focus on portfolio priorities.

  • Identify opportunities and initiate discussion potential strategic, scalable & sustainable clinical practice transformations initiatives that can impact on patient access to quality care.

  • Ensures Digital and innovation / technology are implemented as an enabler for patient centric solutions and effectively contributes to enhancing equitable access to people in assigned accounts / clinics / healthcare systems.

  • Leverage technology, available data / dashboards to drive data-driven decisions to support internal discussions and external engagements.

  • Contribute on field and external stakeholder insights and perspectives in medical and brand internal strategic discussions and communicate internally on actionable items as appropriate.

  • Provide regular updates to the medical team and broader organization on delivery versus plan, variance to plan, proposed mitigation with emphasis on internal & external strategic and patient impact.

  • Ensures own knowledge of best practices and new relevant developments is kept up to date with understanding of its relevance to the team(s).

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Scientific degree or master’s degree in a scientific discipline

  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills

  • Extensive experience of Medical Affairs function within a pharmaceutical industry

  • Strong understanding of medical, clinical development, and regulatory requirements

  • Excellent Project Management and presentation skills

  • Extensive experience in stakeholder management and the ability to interact and manage a range of stakeholders both internally and externally

  • Advanced level analytical and conceptual thinking

  • Knowledge of legislation relevant to pharmaceutical industry

  • Ability to work effectively in a matrix cross-functional environment.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in a scientific discipline (e.g. M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D.)

  • Experience in clinical or pre-clinical research and knowledge of therapuetic area disease state and treatment.

  • Experience in basic research, drug discovery and drug development.

  • Understanding of multiple aspects within Medical Affairs department

  • Ecosystem scaled project experience
