ABOUT ASTRAZENECA
AstraZeneca is a global, science-led, patient-focused biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialisation of prescription medicines for some of the world’s most serious diseases. But we’re more than one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies.
Scientists at AstraZeneca are working every day to turn science fiction into science fact. Our dream - to develop innovative, targeted medicines for every patient that needs them - and to match those treatments to patients most likely to benefit from them – is now becoming a reality. This approach, known as Precision Medicine, is based on those individual characteristics that make some patients respond to treatment better than others. We use this knowledge to develop diagnostic tests that doctors can use to help prescribe the best treatment for each patient.
In the Computational Diagnostic Development team within Precision Medicine, we build innovative software-based diagnostic solutions in leveraging latest machine learning and digital technologies.

The Opportunity as Director Diagnostic Algorithm Expert (m/f/d)
You will be co-creating Computational Diagnostic solutions together with internal cross-functional teams and external partners.
You will be responsible for guiding Computational Diagnostic projects through prototyping, development, deployment, validation and regulatory submission for launch in key markets. The role will provide a combination of data science, AI/ML/deep learning engineering, software development and input into Precision Medicine projects where software-based diagnostics are used in patient segmentation.
As part of a cross-functional project team, you will provide expert direction for development, verification and validation of AI/ML and deep learning algorithms intended for integration into novel computational diagnostics. You will liaise with data science, software development teams and external vendors to create AI/ML algorithm design and development plans including data collection strategy. You will provide oversight for AI/ML development internally and externally and provide input to regulatory strategy and documentation in preparation for diagnostic regulatory submission. This will be to enable timely and successful diagnostic algorithm development, integration and deployment of computational diagnostic solutions to maximise patient access to our medicines.
What you will be doing
- Establish and champion diagnostic AI/ML competency in Precision Medicine
- Conduct design and development planning including data collection strategy for AI/ML and deep learning algorithm development, as well as verification and validation in line with diagnostic and clinical requirements
- Lead development of diagnostic AI/ML/deep learning algorithms in line with quality and regulatory obligations for software as a medical device (SaMD)
- Lead diagnostic algorithm integration and deployment in the clinic
- Provide input to feasibility, usability and SaMD V&V studies
- Provide input to performance evaluation studies and regulatory documents
- Provide input to development and implementation of enterprise-wide capabilities enabling delivery of algorithm-based diagnostic solutions
- Scout, evaluate and liaise with external partners for development of computational diagnostics
Essential Minimum Requirements
- PhD or equivalent experience in data science, AI/ML/deep learning engineering or algorithm and software development for medical device or in vitro diagnostic solutions
- Minimum of 3 years of industry experience in developing AI/ML with emphasis on deep learning applications in line with quality and regulatory obligations, ideally for computational pathology solutions
- Proven record of leading projects in a matrix environment and collaborating in cross-functional teams
Desirable
- Demonstrated leadership in developing and deploying software with clinical/diagnostic intended use
- Experience in development and implementation of Computer Vision applied to Pathology
