Introduction to role:

Are you ready to make a significant impact to protect the environment through your expertise in lifecycle assessment? As a Product Environmental Specialist, you'll play a crucial role in our Global Sustainability and Safety, Health and Environment function. Your work will be instrumental in advancing our industry-leading LCA program, helping us understand the environmental impact of our products and processes. You will collaborate across functions to identify and drive environmental improvements and engage with external partners to promote LCA standardisation in the pharmaceutical industry. Are you prepared to support AstraZeneca's ambitious LCA program and contribute to our Climate and Nature Action strategies?

Accountabilities:

  • Understand and maintain foresight of LCA methodology, standards, and digital tools in the pharmaceutical field.
  • Work with both internal and external partners to strategise, implement, and improve the company LCA program to contribute to achieving AZ's Global Environmental Protection goals.
  • Bridge the gap in communicating technically complex data to the business through your understanding of how to complete LCA modelling and interrogate data from SimaPro and other relevant LCA software.
  • Coach and support a network of functional LCA superusers to improve the LCA program’s impact.
  • Embed LCA data visualisation tools and support the introduction of new digital solutions across key areas of the business.
  • Ensure LCA data is available to support other key environmental programs such as our Product Sustainability Index, assessment of climate-related transition risks, corporate scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting, and marketing company product environmental data requests.
  • Represent AstraZeneca in cross-pharma sector working groups to ensure the adoption of common scientifically robust methodologies for LCA application in the pharma sector.
  • Convey product sustainability and LCA insights through powerful presentations, engaging dashboards, and digital reporting tools to diverse audiences within and outside the organisation.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Knowledge of the theories and practical application of LCA methodology (ISO 14040 & 14044) and an awareness of its benefits and limitations.
  • Familiarity with the pharmaceutical industry, specifically awareness of the drug development process and manufacturing technology required for producing commercial products.
  • Understanding various sustainability concerns and their importance within the pharmaceutical sector.
  • A degree in a scientific, environmental sustainability, or engineering discipline or equivalent.
  • Proficient communicator who has experience engaging with a wide array of interested parties across different departments, diverse organisational contexts, and external stakeholders.
  • An ability to interpret complex situations and information to provide strategic clarity and opportunity.
  • Excellent data analytic skills and technical acuity with a consistent track record in sustainability (ideally LCA) data collation, management, and visualisation.
  • Fluent English speaking and writing.

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Awareness of relevant legislation and policy associated with product environmental impact assessments of medicines.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects from scoping through execution to delivery.
  • Experience using process data libraries (e.g., Ecoinvent) and LCA software applications to model complex processes.
  • Experience using AI tools and demonstration of commitment to upskilling in this area.
  • Experience in a global pharmaceutical corporate team, manufacturing, engineering, or a research & development environment.
