Are you ready to make a significant impact in the field of medical research? As the BBU Externally Sponsored Research Manager, you will be accountable for the operational coordination and management of review, evaluation, initiation, and conduct of Externally Sponsored Research (ESR) studies in the UK for the Cardiovascular Renal and Metabolic (CVRM), Respiratory and Immunology (R&I) and Vaccines and Immune Therapies (VIT) disease areas. This role supports delivery of an internationally impactful UK ESR portfolio, working with some of the leading research institutions and investigators in the UK.  You will act as the primary link between the Sponsor (Institute) and the AstraZeneca UK Biopharmaceuticals Business Unit, working closely with AZ colleagues to drive achievement of our scientific and medical strategies.

Accountabilities

  • Support the development of a local ESR strategy for the BBU portfolio and communicate this to the business.
  • Manage ESR process operationally, including timely progression of new ESR proposals and active tracking of existing ESRs.
  • Act as the primary link between Local and Global teams within AZ regarding ESR activities.
  • Coordinate departmental meetings related to ESRs, including local review committees and performance updates.
  • Negotiate research agreements with sponsors, obtaining expert support from legal and other AZ teams as necessary.
  • Collaborate with AZ functional representatives to organise drug supply and regulatory documentation for active/ongoing studies.
  • Provide regular study status updates to Medical Leadership team, including ESR performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with the field medical team regarding study submissions and communicate regarding progress, actions and requirements.
  • Track study progress from setup to publication and ensure appropriate documentation for close-out of completed studies.
  • Maintain complete and accurate data in the ESR operations system.
  • Monitor study budgets and track financial achievements, ensuring financial systems are up to date and accurate.
  • Support and train Medical Team on ESR processes and systems
  • Coordinate appropriate ESR communications strategy with Medical Leadership and Field Medical teams.
  • Identify ways to improve customer experience and expand innovative clinical research footprint in the UK.
  • Ensure operational compliance with regulations, global and local policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Maintain oversight of risks, quality issues, and deviations in collaboration with Country GxP Leads.
  • Hold oneself and others accountable for ESR responsibilities to ensure efficient and compliant delivery of ESR portfolio.

Essential Skills/Experience

  • Project Management skills
  • Prior experience of managing research portfolios within CVRM, R&I or VIT
  • Engaging and negotiating with clinical/academic organisations.
  • Experience drafting research agreements.
  • Able to perform effectively under pressure with ability to multi-task
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • Proven track record of delivering projects
  • Experience of exercising judgment to make decisions when appropriate
  • Self-starter, able to prioritize own workload, work unsupervised, and use own initiative to solve problems
  • Experience of working cross-functionally/collaboratively both internally and externally
  • Able to be head-office based (London)

Desirable Skills/Experience

  • Degree level education or equivalent experience
  • Experience of working in a Medical Department of a sales & marketing organization
  • UK-based research portfolio management experience
