Typical Accountabilities

Scientific Expertise

  • Maintain clinical/scientific expertise in disease state management, AstraZeneca products, emerging therapies, and the competitive landscape.

  • Contribute to the development and provide project leadership/ management of the therapeutic area Field Medical Strategic Plan (FMSP)At the focused accounts and segments of healthcare system.
  • Share pertinent information regarding clinical trials and scientific treatment trends with healthcare professionals in their respective areas of expertise.

  • Supports training of AstraZeneca’s internal stakeholders to enhance their scientific understanding of the molecule or disease area.

Scientific Exchange

  • Segment and prioritize engagements with healthcare institutions, focusing on enhancing patient outcomes and creating positive patient impact.

  • Identify and establish relationships with key customers and other scientific thought leaders for engaging them in ongoing scientific dialogue on AstraZeneca products and unsolicited discussions about compounds in development.

  • Identify, assess, and engage with Local Medical Societies, Hospitals/Institutions, Payers, Health Care Professionals (including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, etc.), and Key External Experts (KEEs) in accordance with the therapeutic area's medical strategy. 

  • Concentrate efforts on healthcare institutions and their Multi-Disciplinary Teams pertaining to the assigned therapy area. Collaborate closely with these teams to ensure a holistic approach to patient care within the healthcare ecosystem.

  • Organize and facilitate scientific events such as MSL events, Symposiums, Scientific Exchanges, Advisory Boards/Expert Panels, non-promotional standalone events, Meet the Professor sessions, etc., with KEEs and HCPs. Prioritize these events based on their relevance in the patient journey for the related disease.

  • Deliver informative lectures at scientific events tailored to healthcare professionals, aligning with the field medical communication strategy.

  • Expand outreach by visiting a broader spectrum of Health Care Professionals (HCPs) and Key External Experts (KEEs) within the assigned territory and Therapy Area to enhance scientific engagement and awareness.

  • Engage with local or global clinical study projects within the therapeutic area, coordinating with Clinical Research Operations when necessary (participation in Site Initiation Visits, Investigators Meetings, and recruitment improvement efforts).

  • Collaborate with KEEs on study proposals (ESR or Local Study) and/or publications of interest to AstraZeneca.

Customer Insights

  • Effectively identify, gather, analyze, synthesize, report and forward relevant new knowledge about the external scientific/medical environments to internal stakeholders

  • Provide internal stakeholders with actionable items related to medical / brand strategy or clinical development based on customer perspectives.

  • Partner with traditional and non-traditional stakeholders to identify gaps in the patient experience journey as insights to be included in the medical / product strategies.

Access

  • Enhance medicine accessibility within designated healthcare institutions by actively integrating into their healthcare framework. Partner with payers and offer medical-scientific presentations tailored to the therapeutic area's medical strategy and the Key Account Plan, adhering to the Unified Key Account Management approach.

  • Gain a deep insight into the patient experience and the specific scientific requirements of the assigned institutions. Suggest and implement scientifically grounded collaborations to bolster access to medications and health resources.

  • Demonstrate the intrinsic value and efficacy of medicines, ensuring that healthcare institutions recognize their importance and benefits for optimal patient care.

  • Partnership with traditional and non-traditional stakeholder to identify gaps in the patient experience journey as insights to be included in the medical / brand strategies

Scientific and Strategic Leadership

The geography or account basedfield medical roleplays a pivotal and adaptable role within AstraZeneca, contributing significantly to the lifecycle of products, from pre-launch to loss of exclusivity (LoE) focused on patient outcomes within assigned territory

  • Identifies and analyzes priority Hospitals/Institutions across the assigned territory, mapping and engaging key strategic stakeholders to establish science-based partnerships that enhance outcomes and foster win-win relationships between institutions, AZ, and the healthcare system.

  • Develops a comprehensive understanding of the medical strategy and priorities, crafting short and mid-term local medical strategy plans that optimize both quantitative and qualitative impacts and results.

  • Adopts a Key Account Management mindset, working cross-functionally with AZ counterparts to pinpoint areas of opportunity based on scope of impact and readiness, enhancing equitable patient access, and driving changes in local clinical practice.

  • Possesses a Patient-Centric Mindset, deeply analyzing the patient journey for specific diseases, identifying barriers to optimal disease management and patient outcomes, and engaging strategic KEEs, HCPs, and external stakeholders to develop solutions and generate advocacy for practice changes.

  • Responsible for leveraging Digital and innovation / technology as enabler for patient centric solutions.

  • Demonstrates a profound scientific understanding of diseases in which AZ has products or products in the pipeline, continually monitoring global clinical trials to advise on product development and emerging clinical progress.

  • Provides the medical community with access to the latest scientific and medical information, responding to off-label queries transparently and based on objective scientific data.

  • Possesses extensive knowledge of clinical practice across various therapeutic areas, identifying unmet needs in the patient journey, providing insights, and advancing medical communication.

  • Understands treatment guidelines, the regulatory environment, and access and reimbursement dynamics. Cultivates trusted relationships with leading KEEs, HCPs, medical associations, and patient advocacy groups, effectively managing projects that enhance the healthcare system.

  • Actively participates in MSL global or international projects to support local development.

  • Effectively translates scientific principles and product mode of action into compelling communications, guiding KEEs' thinking and handling objections with balance and transparency.

  • Proficiently addresses scientific questions, facilitating deeper understanding among healthcare professionals.

Cross-Functional Knowledge

  • Proficient in commercial aspects, with deep understanding of AZ products and competitor attributes, leveraging this knowledge to enhance medical communication and support decision-making.

  • Collaborates with internal business colleagues, including the sales force, marketing, key account managers,state access team, government affairs, state access team, government affair and other therapeutic areas, to align with local needs and national strategies.

  • Demonstrates effective budget management skills for small-scale projects, aligning with AZ's commercial, branding, and financial planning.

  • Capable of effectively engaging key payers in the country, comprehending their perspectives on science, molecules, pharmacoeconomic, and budgetary impacts. Prepared to contribute the scientific viewpoint in HMO/payer meetings and KAM visits.

Medical Excellence and ClinicalOperations

  • Possesses a solid grasp of pharmacovigilance and GxP principles, showcasing a clear understanding of their significance. This includes practical knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), various types of clinical studies, and requirements for reporting adverse events (AEs).

  • Displays familiarity with key documents associated with generating evidence, such as Phase IIIB-IV clinical trials. Additionally, holds a general understanding of AstraZeneca-sponsored clinical trials, external sponsored research (ESR) policies and procedures, as well as observational research and real-world evidence (RWE) policies and procedures.

  • Exhibits a robust understanding of the Ethical Interactions Policy, along with relevant standards, local laws, and regulations. Moreover, possesses the ability to provide training to others in this domain.

Desirable

  • Doctoral degree in ascientific discipline (e.g. M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D.)

  • Experience in pharmaceutical industry, regulatory environment, clinical or preclinical research, and knowledge of a therapeutic area disease state and treatment. 

  • Demonstrates a history of successful team and inter-team collaboration.

  • Previous experience as an MSL (Medical Science Liaison) or equivalent role is preferred.

  • Possesses exceptional skills in presentation techniques.
