Senior Director of External Scientific Engagement, Amyloidosis

The Senior Director of External Scientific Engagement, Amyloidosis is a highly experienced scientific leader who shapes and leads the external stakeholder engagement strategy aligned to the medical strategy and ensures coordinated execution through strong partnership across the US Medical Affairs organization and other key internal stakeholders, including cross-functional and global teams. It is a key scientific role that reports directly to the Medical Head – Amyloidosis, within the BioPharmaceuticals Business Unit’s US Medical CVRM franchise.
In this role, the individual will bring deep experience in Medical Affairs, external scientific engagement, and stakeholder strategy to elevate AstraZeneca’s scientific leadership in amyloidosis, including ATTR-CM and PN. The role requires significant experience operating in complex matrixed environments, leading cross-functional initiatives, influencing senior stakeholders, and translating scientific strategy into high-impact external engagement plans that drive meaningful outcomes for patients, healthcare professionals, and the broader medical community.
What you’ll do:
- ESE Strategy and Delivery: Lead the end-to-end external scientific engagement strategy, plan, and execution across ESE engagement aligned to TA priorities and congress strategies deriving transparency, consistency, and measurable impact.
- Senior Strategic Leadership: Serve as a senior thought partner to the Medical Head and broader Medical Affairs leadership team, contributing substantial expertise to shape medical priorities, engagement models, and long-range scientific plans in amyloidosis.
- Unified External Interface: Develop and drive a coherent, agile and high-impact external presence that advances AstraZeneca’s scientific leadership agenda in ATTR-CM and PN, ensuring our voice is timely, data-driven, and trusted in front of external stakeholders.
- Transforming Care: Design and deliver strategic engagements that catalyze practice change, streamlining pathways from diagnosis to initiation and persistence, so patients realize the benefits of new launches quickly and sustainably.
- Innovation: Introduce novel solutions and differentiated models for external engagement that strengthen AstraZeneca’s scientific reputation, expand our reach, and accelerate evidence adoption in clinical practice.
- Cross-functional Leadership: Provide leadership across Medical Affairs and partner functions to drive a coordinated and enterprise-minded engagement approach, ensuring alignment of execution with strategic medical objectives and business priorities.
- Capability Building: Help strengthen organizational capability by sharing best practices, mentoring colleagues, and contributing to the evolution of external scientific engagement models, tools, and ways of working.
- Operational Excellence: Ensure all activities, tools, and systems meet the highest ethical and compliance standards—embedding rigor, clarity, and accountability in everything we do.
Essential for the role:
- Advanced scientific degree (i.e. MD, PhD, or PharmD)
- Medical/clinical/scientific expertise in Amyloidosis
- 5+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, including substantial experience in Medical Affairs roles and preferably experience in Amyloidosis
- Strategic and innovative thinker with executive presence
- Demonstrated track record in senior or highly visible roles delivering results in a complex matrix environment, building capabilities, and leading large scale impactful medical initiatives
- Proven experience shaping and executing external engagement strategies
- Proven ability to collaborate and build internal and external networks
- Strong analytical mind-set and ability to quickly assess large amounts of information and distil into key messages and actions
- Persuasive oral and written communication skills, including the ability to develop and deliver impactful presentations & F2F engagements
- Proven ability to collaborate with individuals of diverse experience and backgrounds, across varying functions, levels within the company, or external organizations, to effectively deliver on goals
- Strong business acumen, familiarity with the US healthcare system, and key regulations in the pharmaceutical industry
The annual base pay for this position ranges from $ 243,586.40 - 365,379.60 USD. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, our positions offer a short-term incentive bonus opportunity; eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program. Benefits offered include a qualified retirement program [401(k) plan]; paid vacation and holidays; paid leaves; and, health benefits including medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans. Additional details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base pay (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
