Markets Expansion Regional Medical Lead (MEA & EURASIA)
Role Overview:
The Regional Medical Lead for Markets Expansion – MEA & EURASIA will play a critical role in driving medical excellence, ensuring alignment with global strategies, and encouraging strong scientific leadership across the region. Reporting to the Head of Medical Affairs for Markets Expansion and China, this role will collaborate closely with AstraZeneca Rare Diseases (AZRD) regional and country medical teams, the Alexion Markets Expansion Medical Operations Lead, Global TA medical teams, and cross-functional partners to improve medical capabilities, advance patient outcomes, and craft the market landscape.
Key Responsibilities
Medical Leadership & Strategy
- Act as the primary liaison Alexion Global Medical Affairs and AZRD medical teams in MEA & EURASIA, ensuring continuous knowledge transfer and access to Alexion’s rare disease expertise.
- Drive the medical strategy in the region, ensuring alignment with global and regional priorities while tailoring approaches to local needs.
- Shape the medical and market landscape by engaging key partners, influencing treatment paradigms, and driving adoption of innovative and evidence-based approaches.
- Guide the performance and impact of medical activities across the region.
- Provide strategic input on the capabilities and development of AZRD medical teams to improve expertise and leadership in the region.
- Support Alexion Global Medical and R&D initiatives, ensuring MEA & EURASIA countries are involved in relevant projects and clinical development programs.
Cross-functional Teamwork & Stakeholder Engagement
- Strengthen teamwork between AZRD medical teams and Alexion’s global functions, ensuring regional needs and best practices are effectively communicated.
- Lead and/or coordinate above-country medical initiatives, including regional congresses, medical factual events, advisory boards, publications, and Centers of Perfection (CoE) scientific exchange programs, and more.
- Act as a strategic advisor for medical launch strategies, ensuring flawless execution of advisory boards, HCP interactions, and Key Opinion Leader (KOL) engagement in Alexion’s therapeutic areas.
- Ensure full compliance with local, regional, and global pharmaceutical regulations governing medical activities.
Medical Execution & Performance Monitoring
- Oversee and support the execution of AZRD medical teams’ country-level strategies, ensuring they align with Alexion’s global therapeutic area (TA) strategies.
- Provide regular strategic oversight, reviewing medical activities, key performance indicators (KPIs), and impact reports.
- Maintain consistent engagement with AZRD medical teams, facilitating monthly operational meetings, quarterly regional coordination, and annual strategy reviews.
- Collaborate with Alexion cross-functional teams to drive knowledge-sharing, ensuring best practices are disseminated and implemented across the region.
Core Accountabilities
- Knowledge Transfer & Training: Ensure AZRD medical teams receive ongoing disease-area training and updates from Alexion Global Medical Affairs.
- Medical Expertise & Thought Leadership: Establish Alexion & AZRD as leaders in rare diseases, leveraging innovative medical activities and expert engagement.
- Performance & Impact Measurement: Routinely assess and communicate the efficiency of medical initiatives, ensuring strategic priorities are met.
- Cross-functional Support: Partner with AZRD medical teams to support clinical operations, patient support programs, grants, ISRs, and RWE initiatives.
- Scientific Exchange & External Engagement: Represent Alexion and AZRD at national and international congresses, leveraging opportunities to strengthen medical networks and advance scientific leadership.
Qualifications & Experience
Crucial Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in Medical Affairs within the MEA region, including leadership roles.
- Proven expertise in orphan diseases or rare diseases preferred.
- Strong track record of cross-functional collaboration in complex matrix organizations.
- Deep understanding of medical compliance and pharmaceutical regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to influence treatment paradigms and engage KOLs effectively.
- Experience in late-stage clinical development, real-world evidence (RWE), and observational studies.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English and local languages (preferred).
Education
- M.D., Ph.D., or Pharm.D. degree required.
- Additional certifications or experience in clinical practice is an asset.
