ROLE SUMMARY
An office-based role, Medical Manager is responsible in leading a high-performing Field Medical team that drives enhanced patient outcomes and the safe and effective use of AstraZeneca medicines with prioritization according to company strategy and organizational impact. The role ensures excellence in execution, and leverages innovations wherever appropriate, of the local Medical Affairs strategic plans through the Field Medical team composed of confidence and evidence generation activities.
What you’ll do
- Ensure the Field Medical Strategic Plan (FMSP) and MSL activities are prioritized, aligned with the Medical Affairs Strategic Plans, and executed with excellence and according to budget and timelines.
- Ensure the Field Medical Plan includes an Integrated Engagement plan with an appropriate ratio of traditional and non-traditional stakeholders.
- Identify and prioritize accounts and foster scientific and strategic partnerships with KEEs to transform healthcare ecosystems and improve treatment outcomes that enable patient access to quality care.
- Work closely with the Medical Affairs Team and cross functional team to provide input to medical and brand strategies.
- Work as a strategic partner of the value team (E.g., Marketing and Market Access), providing high-quality scientific and medical inputs to the development and evaluation of local operational brand strategy, including KEEs, customer insights, and competitive intelligence.
- Drive prioritization of activities across the team to ensure appropriate focus on portfolio priorities, including pre-launch and launch excellence.
- Identify opportunities and initiate discussion of potential strategic, scalable & sustainable clinical practice transformation initiatives that can impact patient access to quality care.
- Leverage Digital and Innovation/Technology as an enabler for patient-centric solutions and effectively contribute to enhancing equitable access to people in assigned accounts/ clinics/ healthcare systems.
- Leverage technology and available data to drive data-driven decisions to support internal discussions and external engagements.
- Contribute to the field and external stakeholder insights and perspectives in medical and brand internal strategic discussions and communicate internally on actionable items regularly.
- Provide regular updates to the team and broader organization on delivery versus plan, variance to plan, and proposed mitigation with an emphasis on internal & external strategic and patient impact.
- Ensures own knowledge of the therapeutic area, best practices, relevant scientific peer-reviewed literature, and new relevant developments are kept up to date with an understanding of their relevance to the team(s).
- Responsible for medical training of the sales force.
- Lead national/ cluster advisory board meetings and other above-cluster activities, if necessary.
- Manage Real World Evidence Projects, including observational studies, local data collection, and others.
- Lead an effective, strategic, and outcomes-oriented field medical team with high scientific expertise.
- Lead a team with a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare ecosystem to address population health discussions and deliver outcomes that address impact across the patient pathway.
- Ensure the optimal environment for the MSL development, growth, and high performance. Foster a culture of I&D, agility, innovative mindset, win-win partnerships, and collaboration.
- Guide the team to have a deep understanding of stakeholder needs to effectively communicate complex scientific information using the right content and channel mix.
- Ensure the team’s quality and promptness of status, information, and insights reported back to the cross-functional teams and in company tracking systems.
- Role model AstraZeneca values fostering personal accountability, ownership of individual and team success, operational agility, and growth mindsets.
- Contribute to establishing and implementing policies, procedures, and objectives for own work and for the field medical team(s).
- Ensure compliance with the AZ Code of Ethics, corporate governance, audit requirements, guidelines, industry codes, policies, and procedures.
- Demonstrate appropriate response and document the provision of accurate scientific data in response to unsolicited scientific questions posed by healthcare providers with Company Policies and applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards.

Essential for the role
- Bachelor’s degree in medicine or pharmacy is required
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in a Medical Affairs role, including 1 year of people management experience
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent Project Management and presentation skills
- Advanced level analytical and conceptual thinking
- Thorough knowledge and experience of the pharmaceutical industry and the field of medical function
- Ability to interact and manage a range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Knowledge of legislation relevant to the pharmaceutical industry
Desirable for the role
- Post-graduate master’s degree is an advantage
- Doctoral degree in a scientific discipline (e.g. M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D.)
- Experience in clinical or pre-clinical research and knowledge of therapeutic area disease state and treatment.
- Experience in basic research, drug discovery, and drug development.
- Understanding of multiple aspects within the Medical Affairs department
