We are looking to recruit an Associate Director to manage a small team within our larger Bioinformatics team.  The team is made up of various disciplines and is responsible for driving the application of data management, automation data ingestion and analysis.  The successful candidate will help recruit, shape and lead a team to improve and deliver on our vision of an end-to-end data workflow, In-silico Antibody design and optimisation, with the exciting goal of moving us toward higher throughput and more efficient discovery platforms.

SITE DESCRIPTION

The role is based in our new ground-breaking Discovery Centre (DISC) located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.  This newly purpose-built building brings together the company’s research and development activity in a pioneering strategic R&D centre and global corporate headquarters. The building has been designed with open architecture reflecting AstraZeneca’s approach to research. Open laboratories and glass walls will enable new ways of working across teams, whilst a central courtyard will put science on full display. When we put unexpected teams in the same room, we unleash bold thinking with the power to inspire life-changing medicines. In-person working gives us the platform we need to connect, work at pace and challenge perceptions. That’s why we work, on average, a minimum of three days per week from the office. BUSINESS AREA

Join the Biologics Engineering team at AstraZeneca, where we are responsible for the discovery and optimisation of next-generation biological drug candidates across all key therapy areas. We are developing in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to address unmet medical needs. Be empowered to act fast on smart risks and keep ahead in the fast-paced Oncology field.

What you'll do

Managing a small team and working with a diverse group of scientists in both wet and dry labs, the right candidate will assist with the design and prototyping of data capture, data curation and the automation of data flow for high throughput processes to ensure impact in pipeline projects across all therapeutic areas of interest within AstraZeneca.  As a strong communicator you will interact with BE Leaders and their teams to ensure alignment across our UK and US teams.  You will be able to demonstrate that you can solve software automation problems and implement improvements within the Bioinformatics domain.

Essential for the role

  • Ph.D. or equivalent research experience at the intersection of computational and biological sciences

  • Experience of working in drug discovery

  • Experience of working with Lab Automation

  • Strong track record demonstrating innovation of software solutions for drug discovery that can be used by scientists

  • Line management experience

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Ability to work independently, effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion to meet project deadlines


Desirable for the role

  • Experience with Genedata Biologics or similar platform for data management

  • Extensive code development experience in more than one programming language, employing Git/similar

  • R/Python/Java/Rust coding experience

  • Experience developing data analysis methods and an understanding of the data requirements for downstream machine learning
