AstraZenea's ambition in Cell Therapy: Advancing today’s cell therapies and developing tomorrow’s cancer breakthroughs
The promise of Adoptive Cellular Therapies (ACTs) is based on the knowledge that immune cells are the frontline in the attack against foreign and/or harmful entities in the body. A hallmark of cancer is its ability to evade the immune response by signalling suppression of immune cells. Patient derived immune cells that are expanded and genetically modified before being reintroduced to patients are aimed at harnessing the full potential of immune cells to recognise and attack tumour cells by driving a new immune response.
AstraZeneca is building a cell therapy portfolio that aims to empower and equip T cells, to more effectively fight cancer. We are building on the work already done in blood cancers, where the efficacy potential of chimeric antigen receptor expressing T cells (CAR-T cells) has been demonstrated in some haematological malignancies. Our research teams are exploring new ways to target and arm CAR-Ts to increase their effectiveness in solid tumours by overcoming the immune-suppressive tumour microenvironment.
With an eye to the future, AstraZeneca is working towards next generation cell therapies, where physicians could potentially select from a library of patient-ready therapies already developed from the cells of healthy donors.
