Sustainability at AstraZeneca

We’re harnessing the power of science to build a healthy future for people, society, and the planet – looking at every part of our business to see how we can make a difference.

Sustainability and us

At AstraZeneca, sustainability is part of our DNA, embedded into everything we do. We use our knowledge of science and our ability to innovate to deliver life-changing medicines and help transform the future of healthcare. If giving more people access to solutions across the patient care pathway, protecting the environment and ethical, open and inclusive behaviours are important in your life, then this is the place for you. Join us to accelerate the delivery of sustainable healthcare.

Access to healthcare

From prevention, to diagnosis and treatment, we provide healthcare solutions across the patient care pathway. Our ambition is to help secure a future where all people have access to affordable, sustainable, innovative, healthcare. Through our Healthy Heart Africa, Healthy Lung and Young Health Programmes, we have reached over 44 million people. And we've trained more than 126,000 healthcare workers. We've done all this and more, to deliver improved health outcomes and strengthen healthcare systems across the globe.

To increase access to healthcare, we focus on three areas – Equitable access, Affordability and pricing, and Health system resilience. To give everyone the chance to be as healthy as possible, we are: working to remove barriers to access; innovating to deliver life-changing medicines; investing in ground-breaking global collaborations, local partnerships and company initiatives to deliver infrastructure that gives access to, and improves the quality of, healthcare for more people – creating more resilient health systems worldwide.

Environmental protection

We know that a healthy environment is critical for good health, and that to build a sustainable future, we must take bold action on climate change – together and without delay. That is why we are using a science-led approach to deliver medicines that improve patient outcomes in a way that is respectful of our planet. Through our Ambition Zero Carbon strategy we will become carbon negative across our value chain by 2030, and by investing in new ways of working we are maximising the efficiency of how we use natural resources, ensuring our contribution to society is in harmony with nature. What does this mean for you? As a colleague at AstraZeneca, you will make a real difference, supporting the delivery of net-zero, patient-centric healthcare, and working collaboratively to deliver medicines with the smallest possible environmental impact.

We have three environmental protection focus areas: Ambition Zero Carbon, Product sustainability, and Natural resources. We are pursuing a science-based climate strategy and are on track to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our global operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 98% by 2026 (from a 2015 baseline) and halve our entire value chain footprint by 2030 on the way to a 90% reduction by 2045 (from a 2019 baseline). We were one of the first seven companies worldwide to have our Scope 1-3 targets verified under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Net-Zero Corporate Standard. Through our AZ Forest Programme, we will build ecological and community resilience by planting and maintaining 50 million trees worldwide by the end of 2025.

Ethics and transparency

We are united in our aim of improving the lives of patients, but our ambition is even broader – we want to create societal value beyond the impact of our medicines. This means ensuring ethical, transparent, and inclusive behaviours within our company as well as across all our partners and suppliers. Under our ethics and transparency pillar, our three key focus areas are: Ethical business culture, Inclusion and diversity, Workforce safety and health.

To foster a diverse and empowered workforce, we have dedicated networks and programmes that promote collaboration, continuous learning and which support employees in shaping and achieving their objectives. In 2022, 83% of employees felt that AstraZeneca had a ‘Speak Up’ culture. 49.5% of senior middle management roles were held by women. We continue to support issues and initiatives of importance to the local communities in which we operate and seek to tailor programmes to suit local needs and make positive contributions. We are more than just the medicines we create. That is why building trust by demonstrating integrity, transparency and fair treatment is central to everything we do.
