With a clear focus on our ambitions and commitments, we have a fully-rounded view of sustainability and how to build sustainable thinking into the way we work. Access to healthcare

Providing access to healthcare is at the core of our business, working from prevention to pipeline to treatment. We tackle challenges in partnership with stakeholders, developing a global portfolio of successful access programmes. So far, we have helped more than 19 million people through our select Access to healthcare programmes (Healthy Heart Africa, Young Health Programme, Healthy Lung and Phakamisa). And we’ve trained in excess of 81,000 healthcare professionals. We’ve done all this and more, to support better health and strengthen healthcare systems across the globe.

To broaden access to healthcare, we focus on five areas – disease prevention and treatment, responsible R&D, investments in health systems, environment’s impact on health, and affordability. We are committed to continuous innovation and a long-term perspective, creating innovative medicines designed for unmet medical needs, aiming to increase the number of people we reach. Collaborating with universities to advance scientific understanding enables us to develop our capabilities. Investing in training and technology to give us a better chance of tackling disease. And making our medicines affordable for more patients who need them. This is our approach.

Environmental protection

We recognise the strong connection between a healthy planet and healthy people. With health at the heart of our business, we work to foster environments in which all life can thrive – from promoting environmental stewardship to mitigating climate impacts by preserving natural resources and ensuring the environmental safety of our products. What does this mean for you? We have five environmental focus areas: product environmental stewardship, greenhouse gas reduction, pharmaceuticals in the environment, water stewardship, and waste management. In 2019, we achieved and accelerated progress on a number of milestones, and in 2020 launched our Ambition Zero Carbon strategy to be carbon zero across our global operations by 2025 and carbon negative across our entire value chain by 2030.

Ethics and transparency

A sustainable future is not only about what we do, but also about how we do it. This means demonstrating the ethical behaviours of a dedication to workforce wellbeing, a sense of belonging and a high expectation of ethical business practices. As a part of our ethics and transparency focus, we look at the following areas: ethical business culture, bioethics, inclusion and diversity, talent and workforce evolution, workforce wellbeing and safety, responsible supply chain, and human rights.

By addressing our role as an enterprise and ensuring that we act responsibly, we’re able to bring better ways of working to the surface. As a part of this, we have dedicated networks, where people can communicate with each other and determine their own objectives within our company. So far, 70% of employees feel that AstraZeneca has a ‘Speak Up’ culture. Our commitment to empowering women in senior roles and supporting our LGBT+ community makes us a place of belonging, with 86% of colleagues expressing that they believe that AstraZeneca is a great place to work.
