Resources for Parents, Carers and Teachers

There are many options available to young people once they have finished Year 11 at school. In this section, we aim to outline considerations for young people and provide links to other resources to help you to understand the opportunities that a modern apprenticeship can provide.

Many school leavers have no idea what career they would like, so don’t despair if your child or student is in this situation. Encourage them to research all of the early careers opportunities and don’t assume university is the only way. There are multiple pathways your child or student could take to continue their learning and open that door to employers for an exciting career.

Talk through these options with them and listen to what they have to say about their preferences, and what they are thinking. Any support you can offer to them will be invaluable (even if it doesn’t appear so at the time of the discussion!), but do consider whether you should be making all of the effort for them. Employers look for drive - if you do the work, your child will not be able to demonstrate this convincingly.

Some people have their mind set on a career such as a doctor or a journalist from an early age. But what if your child or student isn’t sure? You might find it helpful to work through the following pointers with them:

  1. Find their motivation
  2. Learn what’s required (as some careers do require experience or a particular qualification)
  3. Look beyond the stereotypes as many industries and occupations will have new purposes, and a more diverse workforce, that will have changed since you were considering these options
  4. Be wary of ‘safe’ choices
  5. Make a shortlist and take a closer look
