Meet Paula

Meet Paula - Therapeutic Area Programming Director

How long have you worked at AstraZeneca and What do you like most about your job?

I have worked in AstraZeneca for 5 years and 5 months. I like being able to work with some of the smartest people in the world in order to develop drugs that address unmet treatment needs for patients.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

I enjoy running, cooking, traveling and reading.  I volunteer as a member of the Coppell Educational Foundation Board of Directors which support the school district in my community.  I love spending time with my immediate and extended family.

Fun fact about you that people may not know?

I love to sing.

Do you have any pets? Family/children?

I don’t have pets or children. I have been married to my Georgia gentleman and love of my life, Calvin Jackson, for 27 years.

What’s your work/life balance experience been at AZ?

For the last 5 years it has been crazy busy in Immuno-oncology. I have enjoyed the challenge, but I should have taken more time for life outside of work. This year, I am intentionally making time for work and family.

How do you network with other women both inside and outside of AZ?

I schedule monthly catch up meetings with female colleagues inside AZ. We share our accomplishments and challenges. Also, I meet up with colleagues outside AZ to catch up on what is happening in their lives. My network of women and their support have been key in my career development.

What would you like other women to know about joining AZ as a new employee?

There are lots of opportunities at AZ for women. In the 5 years that I have worked at AZ, I have been promoted 3 times. I started out as a Principal Programmer and I am now a Therapeutic Area Programming Director, Senior Director Immuno-Oncology Programming. AZ values and rewards hard work and innovative ideas.

What is your favourite memory while at AstraZeneca?

There are so many favorite memories. If I had to choose one it would be when my former department had a social event for the Gaithersburg site. I was impressed to see senior leaders and team members participating in karaoke. It brings a smile on my face every time I think about the event.

How do you feel AstraZeneca best supports your career as a female employee?

AZ has been instrumental in my career development as a female employee. In 2017, I was nominated to attend a leadership course specifically for women leaders. The “Women as Leaders” course changed how I looked at leadership, management and my personal development. The course was key to understanding work/life balance for me and my team. Also, the women who attended the course with me are now a part of my network and my support group. I am so grateful for AZ’s support for me as a female employee and leader.

We’ll keep you up to date
