Hi, my name is Michael Allie and I work at AstraZeneca - Early Clinical Biometrics (ECB)
I joined AstraZeneca in May 2017 as a bright-eyed, junior statistical programmer. One of the first things I realised in the industry is that technical programming expertise and a broad knowledge of clinical trial data, trial conduct and therapeutic areas are equally sought out skills, with programmers generally tending to specialise in either technical or non-technical areas. I was unsure of which direction to focus my development on: I love taking on complex coding tasks, I will always have an interest in statistics after completing a statistical degree and I’m constantly fascinated to learn more about the science that drives the medicine.
Thankfully, I’ve been given many opportunities to direct my personal growth. Some of my coding tools & utilities are shared around the department, last year I presented at a major industry conference for the first time and received an award, and I’ve very recently attended a machine learning course which has given me some ideas I’m itching to try out. My manager constantly encourages me to take on exciting projects to build and broaden my skillset and my colleagues are more than happy to answer questions generated by my limited experience in certain aspects of the role and appreciate the novel ideas and approaches to solving problems which come from a fresh perspective.
I can’t wait to see what interesting opportunities cross my path next at AstraZeneca.
