Research Scientist III – Exploratory Biology – Nephrology Focus

This is what you will do:

This role requires a motivated, creative scientist with experience in nephrology to join our Exploratory Biology team and drive new target discovery and preclinical research programs in rare kidney diseases. You will identify and validate new targets using cellular and molecular biology approaches and contribute to development of new therapies using modalities including small molecules, biologics as well as gene therapy.  Your responsibilities will include building cellular-based disease model systems to elucidate key mechanisms used in the testing and optimization of therapeutic modalities. You will collaborate with functions in Alexion and AstraZeneca to leverage internal capabilities to identify the best therapeutic options for our patients.

You will be responsible for:

  • Identifying new targets in rare kidney disease through knowledge based, bioinformatic or phenotypic methods
  • Establishing “state of the art” cellular models of kidney disease that will allow for understanding key biological mechanisms and support novel therapeutic discovery programs
  • Establishing strategy for new target research efforts in Exploratory Biology
  • Bringing forward proposals for new research programs in rare renal disease
  • Leading preclinical projects in rare kidney diseases by management of creative, hypothesis-driven, scientific research to identify treatments for patients suffering from rare diseases
  • Leading external collaborations to identify new target ideas and technologies

You will need to have:

  • PhD with postdoctoral experience and 4+ years of experience
  • MS or BA/BS in relevant field of study and 12+ years of experience
  • In depth knowledge of kidney physiology and mechanisms of renal disease
  • Experience in the development and analysis of relevant renal cell-based platforms
  • Ability to lead multi-disciplinary scientific projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

We would prefer for you to have:

  • Practical experience in a pharmaceutical research setting with a proven track record of scientific innovation
  • Expérience in leading and mentoring associate scientists
