Project Management Director - PMO Initiatives

Location Mississauga, Ontario, Canada Job ID R-175607 Date posted 06/03/2024

At AstraZeneca, we pride ourselves on crafting a collaborative culture that champions knowledge-sharing, ambitious thinking and innovation – ultimately providing employees with the opportunity to work across teams, functions and even the globe.

Recognizing the importance of individualized flexibility, our ways of working allow employees to balance personal and work commitments while ensuring we continue to create a strong culture of collaboration and teamwork by engaging face-to-face in our offices 3 days a week. Our offices are purposely designed with collaboration in mind, providing space where teams can come together to strategize, brainstorm and connect on key projects.

Our position:

We are bringing together a team of experienced project managers who go beyond just “managing the plan” and provide project leadership and insights to the business customers.  AstraZeneca is building an internal consulting capability in our Global Business Services (GBS) group focused on delivering high-quality project management services to our enterprise organization.

Our vision is to build a global, enterprise project management service that delivers business outcomes by responding to the ongoing internal business demand for strong project management skillsets and capabilities across the company.  You will partner closely with our businesses as a trusted advisor. We will set the highest quality standard, collaborate, and work hard to achieve critical goals timely, on-budget - delivering value across the organization and delighting our customers.

As a leader in our inaugural team in Mississauga, you would be instrumental in building our team, setting the standard for how we work, and ultimately being the customer face of our new GBS.  You will define and deliver the service quality, whilst also working as a project thought leader, responding to their demand for project management through mobilisation to scoping, planning, tracking, reporting, and engaging. With a strong understanding of change management and excellent communication skills, you will work effectively with stakeholders to deliver business outcomes.  You will have access to a comprehensive toolkit of templates and methodologies to ensure a consistent and quality customer experience driving repeat business and new demand from functional areas.

What you will do in this role:

  • Lead cross-Functional, complex projects that often carry high risk and experience some ambiguity in mobilising; you will leverage your project management experience to work with the business to establish strong and aligned project baselines.  You will typically handle projects that are directly connected to and visible to Senior Leaders, delivering >$5-10m to the organisation in terms of benefits.
  • Have line management responsibility for Project Managers within your wider team and identify, recruit/internally onboard and task manage resources to deliver your specific projects.  You will often need to task run project teams within a multiple workstream organisation and sometimes manage more than one project where capacity allows. This could mean task leading a project of >20 resource and personal line management of >4 Project Managers each with their own project accountability.
  • Take a mentor mentality to your team and work to bring the team to an agreed standard of quality; sharing knowledge and holding each other to account.
  • Define, implement, and drive project governance across stakeholder landscape
  • Capture and understand scope and requirements and understand the importance of gaining business sign off before moving to design, particularly amongst a complex stakeholder landscape which sometimes don’t have clear ownership for all aspects of project scope.
  • Ensure organisational change is considered from the beginning of the project and working closely with design as they create the solution.
  • Partner with Workstream Leads to create and execute complex and consolidated project and programme plans where appropriate and revise them as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements to ensure milestones are met effectively and efficiently
  • Manage relationships with workstream leads and key business stakeholders to ensure that business requirements are effectively captured

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance, Business, or Healthcare-related major
  • 10+ years experience in programme/project management for large, complex projects
  • Experience managing projects in a global organization.
  • Demonstration of strong, communication and relationship building skills with experience in collaborating and sharing knowledge between teams
  • Experience considering risks, evaluating alternatives, and encouraging input from others to effectively make decisions and plan mitigation tactics
  • Ability to interpret unstructured information into business requirements
  • Ability to effectively lead a team involving multiple business areas and diverse team member experience levels
  • Experience in relationship management, across both relationship development, maintenance, and ability to understand internal political influence
  • Proven track record in delivering high-risk projects
  • Excellent business engagement and business acumen with sensitivity to internal and external political/economic environment
  • Experience of managing and controlling a project budget
  • Significant experience and skill presenting in front of C-suite/executive level clients through written and verbal channels

Desirable for the role:

  • Project Management Certification and management Consulting experience
  • Experience developing internal talent through actionable feedback and career development support
  • Pharmaceutical or equivalent global organization experience; experience of working within a quality and compliance environment and application of policies, procedures and guidelines
