Introduction to role
This field-based role fulfills the role of a scientific expert in a designated therapeutic focus. The Regional Medical Advisor builds clinical practice through scientific engagements and collaborations with traditional guides, including specialist prominent external consultants and primary care physicians. They also engage with non-traditional participants like regulatory authorities, groups advocating for patients, government agencies, and contributors of pioneering methods. Working closely alongside internal partners, the role supports patient outcomes that are improved and the safe and effective administration of AstraZeneca medicines. It develops and strengthens professional relationships in the medical and health services landscape. It aligns with the Coordinated Engagement Plan. It shares scientific, technical, and pharma-economic information via one-to-one discussions, medically led meetings, and activities. This role supports the medical strategy by leading evidence generation initiatives and motivating the team. It applies a deep knowledge of the health system, clinical pathways, and patient journeys to gather insights. The role strives to implement medical strategic plans that develop scalable, balanced clinical practice changes and improve access to equitable quality care.
Accountabilities
Within the assigned therapeutic area and geographical region, engage in medically informed discussions working with healthcare and research professionals. Include healthcare professionals and, where suitable, interested parties like policy and decision makers, patient advocacy groups, government bodies, and creative solution developers. Do this a according to medical objectives.
Keep medical and research expertise up to date in disease state management, AstraZeneca products, emerging therapies, and the competitive landscape. Help develop and lead the Strategic Plan for the medical affairs group in this particular medical domain.
Act as a subject matter authority for both internal and external interested parties. Collaborate with internal groups to compose and deliver training and mentoring in the clinical specialty.
Lead peer-to-peer scientific dialogue with principal clients, delivering appropriate healthcare and research-based content through the right channel mix to clearly differentiate AstraZeneca med icings.
Respond to unsolicited inquiries from customers by providing focused, balanced healthcare and evidence-based information that supports safe and appropriate use of the products and services offered by AstraZeneca.
Provide scientific and clinical support through presentations and educational sessions for internal teams and external audiences.
Identify key customers and scientific leaders. Build and manage relationships to enable ongoing scientific dialogue on AstraZeneca products and compounds in development.
Plan, organize and facilitate scientific events such as MSL meetings, symposia, scientific exchanges, advisory boards, non-promotional standalone events and Meet the Professor sessions with key experts and healthcare professionals, prioritizing activities based on their relevance to the patient journey.
Deliver impactful lectures at events tailored to healthcare professionals, aligned with the field medical communication strategy.
Collaborate with key external guides on study proposals, including externally sponsored research or local studies, and on publications of interest to AstraZeneca.
Systematically identify, gather, analyse, synthesise and report relevant new knowledge about the external scientific and medical environment, translating insights into actionable recommendations for internal collaborators.
Provide internal teams with customer-based perspectives that inform therapeutic and product planning or clinical development plans.
Engage traditional and non-traditional collaborators to identify gaps in the patient experience journey and feed these insights into medical and product strategies.
Develop peer-level relationships with medical and scientific experts, collaborating with internal colleagues to engage other key external collaborators such as policy makers, payers, government representatives and innovative solution providers in line with medical objectives.
Identify pre-clinical, clinical and post-marketing study investigators in alignment with Medical Plans, supporting data generation activities including review of investigator-sponsored studies.
Expand the My MA contact list where appropriate to include non-traditional authorities from government, payer groups, research institutions and clinical advisory bodies who can support practice change initiatives.
Establish mutually beneficial partnerships with both conventional and non-traditional partners to deliver strategic, scalable and balanced solutions that address patient access gaps within the healthcare ecosystem.
Leverage digital tools, innovation and technology as enablers for scientific exchange and for creating patient-centric solutions that improve outcomes.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of pharmacovigilance and GxP principles, including Good Clinical Practice, types of clinical studies and adverse event reporting requirements, applying this knowledge in daily activities.
Exhibit a robust understanding of Ethical Interactions Policy, relevant standards, local laws and regulations, with the capability to train others in these areas.
Ensure adherence to internal processes, AstraZeneca Global Field Medical Standards and external regulations related to clinical trials, promotional activity and pharmacovigilance to meet internal SOPs and local regulatory requirements.
Essential Skills/Experience
- Scientific and/or a master’s degree with equivalent experience in a technical domain
- Excellent oral and written communication and social skills
- Ability to communicate internally and externally using the different channel mix.

- Excellent presentation skills
- High level analytical and conceptual thinking
Desirable Skills/Experience
- Doctoral degree or equivalent experience working within a scientific team (e.g. M.D., Ph.D., or Pharm.D. with equivalent experience
- Experience in pharmaceutical industry, regulatory environment, clinical or preclinical research, and knowledge of the therapeutic area disease state and treatment.
- Experience with basic research, drug discovery, drug development and KEE interactions.
