Thesis work description:

Poor aqueous solubility is a common challenge for new drug candidates, impacting their development and performance. Mesoporous materials, such as mesoporous silica, show promise in enhancing drug amorphisation and improving dissolution due to their high surface area and nanometre-scale pore structure. This thesis project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of different mesoporous materials for poorly soluble drugs and investigate drug loading limitations relative to solubility in organic solvents.

Key Objectives:

  • Assess a variety of mesoporous materials as platforms for poorly soluble drug substances.
  • Determine drug loading limitations in relation to solubility in organic solvents.
  • Characterize the solid-state properties of loaded mesoporous particles using PXRD and other solid-state methods.
  • Formulate loaded mesoporous particles into tablets and evaluate their dissolution behavior using a dissolution apparatus.
  • Generate practical insights supporting the use of mesoporous materials in drug development.
