Senior Biotransformation Scientist

Location Gothenburg, Västra Götaland County, Sweden Job ID R-248516 Date posted 22/03/2026

Are you a highly motivated biotransformation scientist with experience in metabolite identification using High Resolution Mass Spectrometry? Would you like to apply your expertise in a global company that is accelerating innovative science and turning ideas into life-changing medicines? Then you could be the new colleague we are looking for!

We are recruiting a Senior Biotransformation Scientist to join the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) department within the Respiratory and Immunology (R&I) therapeutic area. The position is based at AstraZeneca’s dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden. Your level of professional experience will be relevant for your initial career level (Associate Principal Scientist or Senior Scientist).

What you’ll do:
As a Senior Biotransformation Scientist, you will be part of a strong team at the forefront of DMPK science focusing on the biological fate of drug molecules in preclinical species and humans. This is a lab-based role, where you will study and elucidate mechanisms and pathways that determine the metabolism and disposition of drug substances. You are responsible for the identification of drug metabolites in biological samples, both from in vitro systems and from in vivo studies. You will provide significant input to the drug projects from target identification to life-cycle management.

The successful candidate is adaptable, highly motivated, and challenge-driven with a history that demonstrates strong interpersonal skills that encourage successful collaborative working relationships. In this role, you will work in a team environment to support programs through the conduct of drug metabolism studies designed to understand biotransformation pathways and routes of elimination of a broad range of therapeutic modalities. Major responsibilities include planning, conducting, and documenting experiments designed to investigate metabolic pathways and structural elucidation of metabolites formed from new drug candidates.

Essential requirements:
•    Proven ability of metabolite characterization using high resolution mass spectrometry and state-of-the-art metabolite acquisition and processing software
•    PhD or equivalent degree in relevant discipline (Biotransformation, Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry)
•    Good understanding of in vitro and in vivo approaches used to understand drug biotransformation issues
•    Ability to work independently and solve problems with an extensive track record of generating high quality data and reports
•    Scientific leadership, evidenced by a publication track record
•    Good communication skills in English, both verbal and in writing
•    Excellent interpersonal skills

Desirable requirements:
•    Knowledge of guidelines and policies in drug development regarding biotransformation, including metabolites in safety testing (MIST)
•    Experience in industry environment
