In this role you form part of a Bioinformatics team working at the cutting edge of research and development in antibody engineering to build and maintain novel bioinformatics pipelines, customising NGS workflows, integrating ML approaches to better inform lab experiments. Join the Biologics Engineering team at AstraZeneca, where we are responsible for the discovery and optimisation of next-generation biological drug candidates across all key therapy areas. We are developing in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to address unmet medical needs. What you'll do

The Bioinformatics team is growing to meet the strategic challenges pursued by AZ Biologics Engineering.  We are looking for a Senior Bioinformatician to join our Biologics Engineering Bioinformatics team.  The role will focus on our expanding needs for NGS for antibody discovery across all therapeutic areas. 

  • Create, automate and maintain Bioinformatics workflows, using NGS data, and guide antibody discovery platforms to explore antibody repertoire.

  • Apply the latest computational approaches to antibody sequencing data; proactively devise and implement innovative bioinformatic solutions with a focus on biologics engineering.

  • Use your knowledge of NGS, drug development and data science to deliver actionable impacts for all therapeutic areas within AZ.

  • Collaborate closely with AZ colleagues in data management, software engineering, computational modeling, and machine learning to drive effective data generation and help address technology/analytics gaps in creating end-to-end workflows.

  • Contribute bioinformatics expertise to the application and development of cutting-edge sequencing technologies in key strategic growth areas.

  • Publish work in high impact journals with industry and academic partners to increase visibility of AZ data science

Essential for the role

  • MS in computer science, bioinformatics or relevant computational field and 1+ year of experience OR BS and 3 years of experience

  • Experience in Illumina or similar workflows, raw data processing and analysis and NGS data integration and interpretation.

  • Experience of successful implementation of bioinformatics tools for scientific data management and analysis of large datasets such as machine learning or other state-of-the-art approaches (e.g. from next generation sequencing applications and antibody library sequencing) and harmonising different types of data sets for analyses. 

  • Experience in the design, development, optimisation, and scaling of informatics applications and solutions. 

  • Familiarity with bioinformatics algorithms and toolkits for NGS analysis.

  • Programming proficiency in a Linux environment of high-performance computing.

  • Ability to explore novel bioinformatic approaches to process and analyze long read NGS data.

Desirable for the role

  • Expertise in NGS workflows.

  • Experienced with any of R, Python, shell scripting programming languages.

  • Experience with creating production quality code and software engineering techniques and practices. e.g. version control, Jira, Agile, Scrum, code reviews etc.

  • Familiarity with multiple R&D data types, especially as they relate to therapeutic area research.

  • Capability of managing multiple simultaneous projects.
