This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of Infectious Diseases and Respiratory area. We are seeking a Medical Scientific Advisor (MSA) for our Infectious Diseases and Respiratory & Immunology team in Espoo, Finland. This field-based position offers the opportunity to lead and drive medical strategy for pre-launch and launch activities, collaborate with external stakeholders, and drive scientific leadership in Infectious Diseases- particularly vaccines and potential future assets - while also contributing to the respiratory therapy area. The MSA will report to the Therapeutic Area Lead (TAL) Finland and work closely with cross-functional teams within AstraZeneca to shape strategic initiatives that improve patient outcomes.
This position is offered as a fixed-term contract of approximately two years.
Key Responsibilities
Medical and Scientific Engagement
- External Stakeholder engagement: Build and maintain strong scientific relationships with Key External Experts (KEEs), healthcare professionals (HCPs), and relevant medical organizations to enable high-quality scientific exchange and gather actionable insights.
- Medical strategy execution: Implement plans aligned with the medical strategy and lead scientific discussions in advisory boards, meetings, and educational programs.
- Medical information support: Respond to unsolicited medical information requests about AZ assets.
Pre-Launch and Launch Support
- Pre-Launch readiness: Lead and drive scientific activities in Infectious diseases to support upcoming product launches by identifying unmet medical needs, assessing the treatment landscape and contributing to medical and product strategies.
- Cross-functional launch support: Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure launch plans are informed by scientific evidence, clinical practice and external stakeholder insights.
- Launch execution: Deliver medical activity plans, ensure alignment with healthcare system needs and clinical practice, and support the appropriate use of new treatments so they can reach eligible patients following approval.
Therapeutic Area Leadership & Transforming Care
- Infectious diseases (ID) leadership: Act as the medical subject matter expert in Infectious Diseases, identifying clinical trends, evidence gaps, and unmet needs across the disease area.
- Improving patient care: Lead initiatives aimed at transforming patient care by applying insights into clinical practice, patient pathways and healthcare system needs.
- Value-driven innovation: Co-lead programs designed to create value for patients, healthcare systems, and AstraZeneca through the integration of innovative, evidence-based approaches into clinical practice.
- Respiratory collaboration: in collaboration with other MSA contribute to the Respiratory therapy area
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Internal partnership: Work in close collaboration with Medical Affairs, Market Access, Clinical Operations, Clinical Development, Commercial and Regulatory Affairs to provide scientific input into strategy, evidence generation, regulatory plans, and access-related activities.
- Clinical trial support: Provide medical and scientific input on clinical trial design, feasibility, and site engagement to support successful study delivery, recruitment and retention.
Externally Sponsored Research (ESR) & Innovation
- Research collaboration: Support ESR and Open Innovation activities by identifying collaborative opportunities to generate real-world evidence and clinical insights that advance scientific understanding in Infectious Diseases.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Advanced degree (MD and/or PhD and/or MSc) in a relevant scientific or medical field. Experience in infectious diseases, respiratory medicine, internal medicine or immunology is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to use AI and digital tools for insight generation, literature analysis, and stakeholder engagement. Applies critical thinking to validate outputs and ensures compliant, ethical use of AI. Shows curiosity and adaptability in adopting new technologies.
- Experience:
- Proven experience in medical affairs (and clinical research), with a focus on infectious diseases and/or respiratory diseases, is preferred.
- Experience in leading scientific communications, developing relationships with external experts, and executing pre-launch and launch activities.
- Skills:
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present convincingly complex scientific data clearly and effectively to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong collaboration and cross-functional teamwork abilities.
- Excellent understanding of Finnish health care environment.
- Knowledge of regulatory and medical affairs processes in Finland
- Understanding the drug development lifecycle.
- Ability to support team development.
- Fluent Finnish and excellent written and spoken knowledge of English.
