Director, Safety, Health and Environment
Introduction to role:

As the Director of Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) at our College Park campus, you'll play a crucial role in steering the site towards regulatory excellence and environmental sustainability. Accountabilities:
Leadership & Strategy:
- Lead and inspire a team of SHE professionals through coaching and mentoring, enabling continuous SHE improvement and best practices.
- Identify future-focused SHE capability needs and determine resource plans considering hiring, staffing, and development.
- Influence broader business strategy with SHE data and insights, creating operational systems & plans that align with Campus strategy.
- Collaborate with Campus leadership to develop the SHE Governance process suitable for the scale of activities.
- Identify enablers and barriers to change within the team and wider business, implementing tools and champions to drive SHE improvements.
Compliance & Risk Management:
- Ensure a best-in-class safety management system.
- Ensure compliance with COMAH regulations, Industrial Emission Licence (IEL), biosafety, radiation safety, occupational hygiene, and other legal requirements.
- Develop and implement SHE programs to assess risk, identify controls, and ensure robust risk mitigation.
- Execute tactical SHE objectives to ensure compliance, manage risk proactively, and integrate SHE controls into operations.
Program Management:
- Implement a SHE assurance program to manage operational and compliance risks effectively.
- Deploy an Occupational Health Monitoring program for hazardous chemicals and potent compounds.
- Manage the SHE budget including headcount, waste management, campus security, consulting, environmental sampling, etc.
- Lead emergency response planning and crisis management activities for the Campus.
- Drive efficiencies through digital tools and best practices.
Training & Development:
- Coordinate comprehensive training programs for workplace safety and environmental sustainability.
- Promote a proactive safety culture aligned with Human & Operational Performance principles.
Communication & Reporting:
- Act as the primary contact with regulatory bodies, local authorities, and Corporate SHE functions.
- Review and approve regulatory compliance documentation for external agencies.
- Prepare and present SHE performance through LEAN tiered processes.
Sustainability:
- Lead cross-functional environmental sustainability initiatives supporting AstraZeneca’s ambitious sustainability goals.
Essential Skills/Experience:
- 15+ years experience in leading SHE program management in safety and compliance in pharmaceutical, biotechnology or chemical industries, with at least 5 years in a leadership position.
- Experience with regulatory requirements including EPA, HSA, and other local regulatory agencies.
- Comprehensive knowledge of COMAH regulations and experience managing SHE requirements at a COMAH site.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
- Experience in leading occupational health monitoring, chemical hygiene, containment of potent compounds, biosafety, radiological, and process safety programs.
- Experience in developing and deploying an Occupational Health Management Program.
- Experience in managing safety on major construction projects.
Desirable Skills/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Chemical Engineering, or related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
