Job Title: Senior Manager – DevOps Platform & Forward Engineering

GCL: E

Introduction to role:

Are you ready to turn world-class DevOps platforms into a force multiplier for speed, quality, and reliability across a global enterprise? In this role, you will lead the engineering foundations that power how teams build, test, secure, and ship software that enables our mission to transform patient outcomes. Your work will ensure our core platforms are resilient, scalable, and simple to use—so product and engineering teams can move with confidence.

You will guide a high-performing team to elevate our use of GitHub, GitHub Actions, Jira, Confluence, SonarQube, Artifactory, and related ecosystems, balancing operational excellence with bold engineering improvements. As we accelerate our shift to a more digital and data-led business, you will shape the capabilities, standards, and automations that unlock impact at scale. Could you see yourself leading the service strategy while also rolling up your sleeves to solve complex CI/CD challenges and lead change?

Accountabilities:

  • Team Leadership and Development: Lead, manage, and develop a team of DevOps/Platform Engineers, driving capability, engagement, performance, and delivery.
  • Enterprise Platform Technical Leadership: Provide advanced technical leadership across enterprise engineering and DevOps platforms including GitHub, GitHub Actions, GitHub Co-Pilot, Jira, Confluence, SonarQube, and Jfrog Artifactory & Eco Systems.
  • Operational Service Ownership: Own operational service delivery for supported platforms, ensuring reliability, supportability, and performance against agreed expectations and standards.
  • Strategic Initiatives and Change Delivery: Lead upgrades, migrations, integrations, platform enhancements, and service improvements that reduce toil and increase developer productivity.
  • Demand Management and Prioritization: Assess and balance business need, technical complexity, urgency, and capacity to sequence high-value work.
  • Work Differentiation and Assignment: Apply expert judgment to distinguish routine support from complex engineering, matching problems to the right skills and delivery approach.
  • Sophisticated Problem Resolution and Risk Management: Oversee the resolution of difficult technical issues, escalations, recurring incidents, CI/CD challenges, and platform risks spanning multiple services.
  • Guide Guidance and Collaborator Engagement: Advise engineers and project teams on technical options, operational implications, risk trade-offs, and delivery decisions to drive the best outcomes.
  • Service Model and Process Improvement: Define, implement, and improve support models, workflows, and service processes for efficiency, quality, and consistency.
  • Metrics, Reporting, and Insights: Establish and review service metrics and reporting to inform decisions and drive continuous improvement.
  • Influence and Innovation: Align internal and external stakeholders to a clear service direction and champion innovation through automation, AI adoption, and better ways of working.
  • Governance and Compliance Alignment: Ensure platform services and engineering align with enterprise standards, security requirements, architectural principles, and operational controls.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Significant experience in DevOps engineering, enterprise platforms, or technical service delivery in a complex interpersonal environment.
  • Proven people management experience, including leadership of technical teams, performance management, coaching, and capability development.
  • Sophisticated technical expertise in enterprise engineering platforms and tooling, particularly Jira, Confluence, GitHub, GitHub Actions, SonarQube, and Artifactory, Microfocus ALM and Load Runner.
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD concepts, tools, and fixing, including GitHub Actions and Self-Hosted Runners in the EKS Clusters.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading or coordinating the solving of complex technical and operational issues across platforms, services, and integrations.
  • Strong experience in operational service leadership, including support models, prioritization, SLA delivery, incident management, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to solve difficult but defined problems that may span multiple areas, applying expert judgment to develop practical solutions.

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Experience in an international corporate setting with geographically dispersed collaborators and teams .
  • Experience within DevOps or platform engineering functions.
  • Knowledge of AWS or other cloud environments.
  • Experience with automation and scripting, including Python, Shell, or PowerShell.
  • Exposure to Kubernetes, containers, or related modern engineering platforms.
  • Experience with REST APIs, platform integrations, and interoperability.
  • Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and service reporting tools.
  • Experience in applying AI to improve engineering workflows, support services, or productivity.

When we put unexpected teams in the same room, we unleash ambitious thinking with the power to inspire life-changing medicines. In-person working gives us the platform we need to connect, work at pace and challenge perceptions. That's why we work, on average, a minimum of three days per week from the office. But that doesn't mean we're not flexible. We balance the expectation of being in the office while respecting individual flexibility. Join us in our unique and ambitious world.

Why AstraZeneca:

Here, your engineering leadership connects directly to real-world outcomes: faster research cycles, safer operations, and smarter decisions that help patients worldwide. You will collaborate with deep specialists and inventive colleagues, working across fields to turn modern tooling, automation, and AI into practical capabilities at scale. We pair high ambition with courtesy and trust, giving you the freedom to experiment, the support to learn quickly, and the opportunity to raise your profile by sharing your work and supplying to vibrant communities of practice. This is a place where hands-on platform excellence and thoughtful service leadership come together to shape a digital, data-led future.
