At AstraZeneca, we are seeking a Therapeutic Area Medical Lead – Oncology to join our team in the Andean Cluster. This role is responsible for defining and executing the medical strategy for the therapeutic area, ensuring scientific leadership, a strong patient‑centric focus, and alignment with business objectives.

The Therapeutic Area Medical Lead plays a key role in transforming the healthcare ecosystem by driving evidence generation, strengthening external partnerships, and enabling access to innovative therapies. Additionally, this role leads to cross-functional collaboration and acts as a catalyst for sustainable change in clinical practice and patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Medical Strategy and Scientific Leadership

Define and execute the medical strategy for the Oncology area, ensuring alignment with global and regional priorities. Ensure a patient‑centric approach across all medical activities, while providing expert medical input to strengthen brand strategy, market access, regulatory affairs, and commercial initiatives.

  • Evidence Generation and Insights

Lead the design and execution of Real‑World Evidence (RWE) projects and clinical studies in pre‑ and post‑launch phases. Translate scientific data into actionable insights that support decision‑making and improve patient outcomes, while identifying evidence gaps and developing innovative evidence‑generation strategies.

  • Cross‑functional Collaboration

Work seamlessly with marketing, market access, regulatory, clinical operations, and commercial teams to ensure aligned execution. Actively participate in brand teams, contributing strong medical insights to strategic and tactical plans, and influence global and regional teams by integrating local market insights.

  • External Engagement

Build and maintain strategic relationships with Key External Experts (KEEs), healthcare professionals, scientific societies, and patient associations. Lead advisory boards and scientific exchange activities, contributing to AstraZeneca’s positioning as a scientific leader in Oncology.

  • Leadership and Talent Development

Lead, develop, and empower high‑performing medical teams, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning. Drive cross‑functional alignment and shared accountability to achieve the organization’s strategic objectives.

Requirements and Experience

  • Degree in Medicine, Pharmacy, PhD, or a life‑sciences‑related field.
  • Experience in Medical Affairs within the pharmaceutical industry (Oncology experience highly desirable).
  • Strong background in medical strategy, evidence generation, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross‑functionally and influence senior stakeholders.
  • Experience with Real‑World Evidence (RWE) projects and clinical studies.
  • Strong understanding of the healthcare system, patient journey, and access dynamics.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and strategic‑thinking skills.
  • Experience in the Andean Cluster is a plus.
  • Advanced English proficiency.
  • Strong digital skills (Teams, Copilot, AZChatGPT, PowerPoint, Power BI)
