Introduction to role

BioPharmaceuticals Medical (BPM) ensures the best patient outcomes by providing healthcare decision-makers around the world with the evidence and confidence they need on AstraZeneca therapies and support our internal stakeholders with medical insight and expertise. BPM provides medical leadership with market participation and connectivity while also impacting the life cycle planning and execution of all our products. BPM aims to lead AstraZeneca in achieving scientific leadership, being a great place to work, and keeping patients at the core of everything we do.

The Senior Director, Health Data Implementation is part of the Global BPM Evidence organization; reporting directly to the Head, Real World Science & Analytics. This critical role will lead the design and delivery of world-class, innovative real world data (RWD) initiatives to be implemented globally for field medical teams, cross-functional partners and AstraZeneca country affiliates. Platforms that integrate contemporary, location-relevant RWD from primary, secondary, and tertiary care settings will be a key focus.

The incumbent will be accountable for the development and implementation of these RWD platforms to deliver Medical, Commercial, Policy, and R&D strategies for AstraZeneca across therapeutic areas. The role requires interaction with diverse range of scientific, technical, and business experts to ensure scientific quality, build the necessary capabilities at AstraZeneca, and drive the timely delivery of RWD to address critical evidence needs for internal and external stakeholders. Externally, the Senior Director, Health Data Implementation will collaborate with health systems, data custodians and policy makers on partnerships that maximize our collective ability to leverage RWD to change clinical practice.

The Senior Director, Health Data Implementation will be accountable for chairing RWD steering committees and hold a key role on cross-functional working groups that will link RWD platforms to enterprise strategy. This exciting role will further lead cross-functional strategy, planning, alignment, governance and delivery of RWD solutions – ensuring optimal reach and impact in line with program objectives and KPIs. The role will work closely with the Global and local cross-functional teams to successfully deliver and pioneer RWD platforms around the world. The Senior Director, Health Data Implementation will further assist in advancing and crafting AZ’s RWD strategy through supporting due diligence on new data providers/vendors, informatics support for data acquisitions, and use cases for RWD across therapeutic areas and functional areas.

Typical Accountabilities

  • Lead the implementation of RWD platforms across countries, while supporting their design and development in collaboration with IT and other partners

  • Drive the strategic alignment of RWD initiatives (e.g., disease burden heatmap platforms) to medical and cross-functional priorities across therapeutic areas to maximize patient impact

  • Identify, initiate and foster strategic external partnerships to optimize our ability to positively impact health systems through RWD

  • Collaborate with technical teams to build analytical tools and develop visual analytics to enable self-serving applications for stakeholders as part of a forward-thinking RWE strategy and AI opportunities

  • Build capabilities across local and Global teams in identifying, acquiring, integrating and leveraging diverse RWD from multiple geographic and health system sources

  • Evaluate and assess strengths and weaknesses of external data sources for each therapeutic area to continuously improve RWD initiatives, including ATLAS

  • Plan and advocate for the scaling RWD programs to maximize practice change opportunities (e.g., leading pan-market implementation teams), including resource management

  • Collect and drive visibility on RWD use cases, external impact and best practice sharing, including KPI design and management

  • Discover new use cases for RWD impact by exploring diverse datasets, assessing feasibility and evaluating new technologies – while forging novel opportunities for RWD impact across R&D, Government Affairs, Market Access and beyond

  • Understand and communicate on technologies behind RWD knowledge management and data insight tools

  • Translate problems into specific analytical questions and form hypotheses that can be answered with RWD

  • Publish research into the areas of automation and visualization for generating Real World Evidence

  • Lead senior leader and cross-functional engagement to scale RWD platforms strategically and sustainably, including our global/local RWD community of practice

  • Mentorship and oversight of other RWD leaders within BPM Evidence and related functional areas

Education, Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Business and/or medical science degree with commercial experience is required

  • Expertise in RWD and evidence generation, with a focus on patient and health system impact

  • Experience in healthcare or biopharma industry, with a preference for experience in R&I and CVRM therapeutic areas

  • Robust leadership skills - promotes excellence in people, processes & technologies to create a culture of innovation

  • Ability to influence and negotiate at an Executive level

  • Experience in product marketing and deployment – delivering new solutions to market (ability to shape a new proposition to deliver value to stakeholders)

  • Ability to lead and/or engage cross-functional working groups and teams to deliver results

  • Proven experience of engaging with and leveraging insights from external customers e.g. external experts, patients and payers

  • Excellent project management skills

  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to analyse complex data and situations and develop a range of options/solutions

  • Successful record of creating and deploying digital content & channels

  • Ability to interpret performance data and to generate high level and detailed reports for internal and external stakeholders

  • Ability to enthuse, motivate, empower and involve partners to meet challenging targets by providing direction, reviewing performance, and motivating others

  • In-depth understanding of medical and commercial strategy, methodologies and tools (Real world data, evidence generation, customer profiling and segmentation, market research techniques including patient journey mapping, competitive intelligence resources)

  • Demonstrated ability to bring ideas to action in the following areas:

    • Product launch

    • Real world data

    • Market shaping/ expansion

    • Unbranded / disease awareness HCP campaigns

  • Experience collaborating with IT teams to drive technical delivery of new visualization platforms for internal and external use
