Global Clinical Solutions (GCS) drives the delivery of services and technology for AstraZeneca for its internal and external stakeholders.

The Director, GCS has responsibility for both people and shaping programme solutions and acts as a liaison between the programme and business stakeholders to ensure that business requirements are effectively translated into solutions and benefits are understood. The individual is accountable for providing leadership and strategic direction to GCS personnel, and for driving the delivery of operational processes/ procedures, technology and services that meet customer needs and enable optimal end-to-end delivery of clinical studies.

The Director, GCS is accountable for the identification, definition, and delivery of major/ transformative improvements in end-to-end clinical study delivery in conjunction with partner organisations internally and externally within their respective category.
The GCS Director can be a member of the GCS Leadership Team (GCS LT) or a leader within a defined area of the function, reporting to the GCS LT member

All Directors, GCS will Sponsor or lead improvement projects as needed and will contribute to functional and regional initiatives

Typical Accountabilities

  • The Director, Study & Data Solution Implementation is a member of the S&DS Leadership Team and is accountable for providing the Strategy Vision and Leadership of Services that support the Solution Implementation Lead role.
  • The SILs are a group of Associate Directors who provide a project management service specifically to support technology implementation in clinical trials.
  • The Director has direct line leadership and accountability for a function delivering customer-focused support and services for the wider organisation, with approx. 10 ADs
  • The Director is accountable for the identification, definition and delivery of transformative improvements in end-to-end clinical study delivery, utilising tools and techniques to achieve continuous improvement and value creation.
  • The SIL Directors include collaboration and leadership to support implementation of new central services and solutions as identified by the business.
  • S/he leads and drives continuous improvement and innovation via industry-leading developments in line with the
  • Development Operations business objectives, in partnership with but not limited to, all SMO functions, SMM, Procurement,
  • Alliance Management, Biometrics Operations and Digital Health and contributes to functional, cross-functional and regional initiatives.
  • The success of the role is also strongly governed by the strong leadership of external partnerships with various suppliers working together to continually identify new and better ways to provide successful and effective central services for study teams and the wider business needs.
  • Strong organisational change management, influencing, communication and process adoption skills are a critical requirement, ensuring selection of processes and systems, are successfully implemented in a consistent manner across all TAs and all expected end users.


  • Bachelor of Science in an appropriate discipline or equivalent experience
  • Extensive experience in drug development within a pharmaceutical or clinical background
  • Posess an elevated level of business process, technology, and clinical study information knowledge
  • Demonstrated project management skills and proven skills to deliver to time, cost, and quality in large scale complex projects
  • Ability to interpret and communicate technical information into business language
  • Proven leadership skills promoting motivation and empowerment of others to accomplish individual, team and organisational objectives
  • Experience in working successfully and collaboratively with external partners delivering mutual benefit
  • Ability to identify opportunities, lead and foster cross-functional collaboration and to work across boundaries to increase performance in the end-to-end clinical development value chain
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication and influencing skills, negotiation, presentation, knowledge transfer (mentoring), collaboration, problem solving, conflict management and interpersonal skills


  • Advanced degree in a scientific discipline
  • Expert reputation within the business and industry
  • Experience of utilizing standard process improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean Six Sigma) to identify root causes of process issues and identify
  • areas of process improvement
  • Extensive experience in the development and
  • management of business processes to deliver efficiencies in business performance Experienced and highly capable in line management and in driving
  • performance on a global basis
  • Demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities, resources, performance targets and project initiatives in a global and regional environment
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage through change and see change as an opportunity to improve performance and add value to the business
  • Experience of working in a global organisation with complex/ geographical context
