This unit has responsibility for the value chain from discovery through to late-stage development, enabling rapid acceleration of promising early-stage assets and life-cycle management programs

The Translational Medicine (TM) function exists within Hematology R&D to ensure effective and strategic biomarker studies for Hematology & Oncology project teams.  Closely interacting with the pre-clinical BioScience and Discovery, Early Clinical Development, and Precision Medicine & Biosamples diagnostics functions, the Hematology Translational Medicine team is the single point of accountability for delivery of robust, scientifically-driven biomarkers to all Haematology project teams, providing feasibility assessments, technical validation, centralized biomarker analysis capability for clinical samples, delivery of translational science research and early clinical phase engagement.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

The Director, Translational Research plays an integral role in the development and execution of critical projects that support the Haematology Translational Medicine Department’s aims in Translational Medicine, clinical trial support, and pre-clinical drug development. The Director Translational Research will more specifically in this role:

•   Be accountable for the development of scientifically rigorous preclinical and clinical translational research strategies that assess proof of mechanism, establish early signs of efficacy, illuminate mechanisms of resistance, and drive patient selection and combinations strategies

•  Manage and mentor Translational Research scientists to support and develop in-house Hematology Translational Medicine research efforts.

•  Participates in integrated Translational Medicine and drug development projects by engaging with internal and external experts in different disciplines.

•  Innovate with academic collaborators to expand Translational Medicine research activities

•  Effectively presents and communicates research findings to internal and external collaborators, including upper management, regulatory agencies, and at medical scientific conferences

•   Excellent organization and communication skills for cross-functional AstraZeneca interactions

•  Performs all duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

•  Advanced degree (e.g., PhD, MD, MD/PhD, Pharm. D.), with focus on cancer biology, immunology, and/or multi-omics with experience in hematology-oncology being highly desirable.

•  minimum of 7 years of experience in oncology drug discovery and development

•  Understanding of preclinical modelling that can inform clinical development plan (CDP) evolution

•  Demonstrated excellence in designing, execution and interpreting cancer biomarkers studies in preclinical modelling and clinical trials, including biomarker development, validation and clinical application

•  Knowledge of clinical protocol design, clinical trial operations, clinical trial bio specimen logistics, analytical and clinical validation of biomarker assays,

•  Direct experience and/or familiarity with novel technologies applicable to cancer biomarker and/or immune response analysis (e.g., next-generation omics, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, AI-based analytical approaches)

•  Experience with multiple modalities such as small molecules, Antibody-drug Conjugates (ADCs), T-Cell Engagers (TCEs) and CARTs, PTOTACs and molecular glues, nanoparticles and epigenetics agents.

•  Proven experience in developing positive, collaborative partnerships that drive sustainable business results

•  Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work as an integral member of a team, and aptitude in training and supervising direct reports

•  Strong written and oral communication skills

• Robust track record of scientific achievement, as evidenced by publication record
