BUSINESS AREA

Discovery Sciences applies deep technical expertise in specialist technologies to support the delivery of targets and molecules to the early AstraZeneca pipeline. Targets are identified through our human genomics and functional genomics efforts, employing the latest technologies in genome editing and advanced cell model development. Once identified and validated, we work with therapy area project teams to identify novel small molecules effectors of these targets using our integrated sample management and platform screening groups.

What you’ll do

  • Deliver a leading Chemical Biology and Proteomics capability to support preclinical and clinical drug discovery projects across all AstraZeneca therapeutic areas, with resources aligned with Discovery Sciences prioritisation and strategy
  • Develop a science, technology and improvement vision for the use of Chemical Biology and Proteomics methods in small molecule drug discovery
  • Lead a high-performing team with a passion for scientific delivery and innovation.   
  • Drive innovation, scientific excellence and external visibility of the Chemical Biology and Proteomics capability through internal scientific/technological development, external collaborations, publications and conference presentations

Essential for the role

  • PhD in chemistry/chemical biology/proteomics or related discipline with 8 or more years’ experience in a drug discovery or similar R&D environment
  • Track record of leading teams in highly matrixed science and technology-based organisations and evidence of ability to shape groups to the needs of the business. 
  • Experience with project management, change management and/or implementation of process optimization approaches
  • Broad industrial and academic network with key stakeholders and innovation leaders internationally
  • Excellent communication skills

Desirable for the role

  • Experience with the development of informatics tools to enable integrated analysis of proteomics data
