The AstraZeneca Newark Supply Site was established in 1971 and currently employs approximately 260 people. Over the course of these years, Newark has undergone many product portfolio changes since it first began as Stuart Pharmaceuticals through today as the designated AZ North America Packaging Center of Excellence and a Flexible Formulation site for the global supply of complex products. What you'll do:

The Engineering Leader is responsible for the overall effectiveness of the Site’s Engineering team and the life cycle management of the Packaging, Formulation, and Facilities assets and technical processes.  Through effective leadership and a continuous improvement environment, maintains a highly focused team delivering technical projects and processes that deliver safe, compliant and reliable supply operations while also meeting customer expectations including cost and schedule.  In this capacity, sets the strategic and tactical direction of the group, aligning delivery to the Newark Site Business Plan.  Key Elements of this role include:

  • Directing asset life cycle management across Formulation, Packaging,  Facilities, and Warehouse Operations through embedded System/equipment and technology ownership

  • Applying appropriate contracting strategies with OSPs to deliver flexibility and value while supplementing the team’s core and non-core technical capabilities

  • Planning, directing and delivering site equipment and infrastructure master plans, including risk management, mitigation, and capital investment decisions

  • Providing strategic leadership for the site Capital Program, overseeing project delivery teams, and ensuring governance processes are followed

  • Lead the Engineering organization, providing a highly capable and agile technical work force to deliver asset life cycle, project management and technical process owner services to customers that meet critical business parameters (e.g. product / process performance, cost, time, quality, reliability).

  • Deliver technical processes, strategies, and projects needed to support Lean operations including improvements in OEE, changeover, centerlines, reactive maintenance and yield.

  • Provide strategic leadership and process ownership of site master plans, capital programs and project delivery to ensure appropriate cross-site project prioritization and execution.

  • Drive improvements and manage the life cycle of assets through ownership of technical processes, systems and equipment combined with high quality project delivery

  • Collaborate with members of the AstraZeneca Engineering Community and form strategic external partnerships/contracting strategies to optimize value while building Engineering capability.

  • In collaboration with SHE, drive the Energy Reduction and Site Sustainability program plans for the Facility, the PETs and for support groups.

  • Support around-the-clock activities to meet business needs which includes coordinating, staffing and taking part in weekend and holiday on-call program as well as requirements to work second,  third and weekend shifts to ensure appropriate coverage/oversight for the team.

  • Manage engineering resources to ensure complex Technical Investigations, deviations and CAPA are completed to meet business and regulatory requirements

  • Develop and manage the group’s capital and expense budgets (approximately $10M-20M) within agreed performance parameters, and deliver costs savings from improvement programs including Lean, Maintenance Excellence, Energy Management & Sustainability.

  • Coach and provide professional development to the Site Engineering team: promoting capability building and continuous improvement through performance management

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or science or related field

  • 10+ years of experience in engineering projects and/or technical management and/or maintenance

  • 5+ years of supervisory experience with strong leadership of technical and project management team

  • Knowledge of cGMP environments and specific knowledge of their application to facility and utility requirements

  • Advanced Knowledge of cGMP and FDA policies/procedures including interactions with regulatory authorities

  • Good understanding of Safety, Health and Environment programs

  • Ability to work at times across all three shifts

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant experience in managing a multidisciplinary scientific or technical organization within a customer focused delivery organization

  • Pharmaceutical Industry experience

  • Experience working in a Lean manufacturing environment

  • Advance knowledge of compliance requirements

  • Budgetary/fiscal responsibility
