Innovation Business Manager

In a moment of complete transformation, we need to grasp and boost the power of Innovation and Digital Strategy (IDS) to translate them into knowledge and impact on the healthcare ecosystem. The Innovation Business Manager is a core member of the Innovation and Digital Strategy Leadership team.

This role leads the definition and implementation of the Innovation and Digital Strategy model. He/She/They defines processes, projects, roles, and responsibilities of the team in collaboration with the Senior leadership. He/She/They ensures the strategic and tactical implementation of core projects and business innovation value chain across the team. In addition, He/She/They challenges and nurtures people managers and individual contributors to define scopes of work, roles and responsibilities, ensure in-depth understanding of objectives and priorities and leverage cross-functional alignment and efficiencies.  

As a partner to the Business Leadership, this role brings independent and strategic thinking to the company, He/She/They ensures seamless implementation and adaptation of the innovation and digital strategy cross functionally.

This role includes managerial responsibility, senior decision-making skills, support driven mindset and autonomy.


People and Organization

Demonstrates strong curiosity with a multidisciplinary approach. Performs effective cross functional leadership and team change management skills. He/She/they leads talent nurture and development according to AZ and healthcare ecosystem needs

  • He/she is a core player for the effective leadership, management, and cross collaboration of the IDS team.
  • He/she is responsible to establish an Internal strategic consulting model, focusing on the implementation of the IDS strategy within the team.

Strategy and Management

  • Defines, plans, and oversees the implementation of the IDS strategy in close coordination with the IDS Director and the IDS Leadership team.
  • Establish a functional roles & responsibilities matrix for every manager and individual contributors including transformational, adjacent and core innovation activities and deliverables across IDS.
  • Brings strategy consulting methodology to the team, orchestrating cross-functional efficiencies and alignment between Tech&Data, Business Excellence, Customer Engagement & Digital Transformation, Innovative Healthcare Solutions and Capabilities Units.  
  • As a decision-making and planning oriented leader, He/She/They supports the Innovation Leadership Team core activities and deliverables. Including, among others, strategic meetings coordination, core KPIs and objectives monitoring, cross collaboration activities, ways of working initiative and internal strategic modeling and project management.  
  • He/She/they will be responsible for the definition of value chains and business outcomes across Innovation & Digital Strategy teams, developing a deep understanding of the current project pipeline. Organizes an assessment system and internal governance to prioritize projects and resource allocation to maximize business impact.
  • Ensures monitoring of performance and outcomes to ensure impact and timeliness.
  • Support the Health Innovative Solutions Lead in the set-up and operational execution of the Innovation Committee.
  • Contribute to the strategic design and execution of an innovation and digital strategy internal capability program to ensure the upskilling and talent excellence for the challenges of the future.
  • Proactively creates and brings executive proposals to ensure the governance of core strategic projects and improves the IDS model and performance as part of the senior team.
  • Leads IDS communication and internal capabilities plan, aligned with Communications Team and Capabilities Team.
  • High level of accountability on implementation and cascading of working model, and execution timelines
  • Brings leadership skills, strong stakeholder management and complex business environment understanding, ensuring alignment with therapeutical areas, access, medical and functions in order to ensure business impact.
  • In the medium term, He/She/They Stablish a Competitive Intelligence Office to provide innovation decision making with strategic inputs from external sources and field team intelligence.

  • Contributes to the IDS performance with deep knowledge of health ecosystem insights and strategic consulting acumen.
  • Transfers a strong and competitive digital mindset across teams, projects, communications, and senior executive role modeling.
  • Creates a culture of curiosity towards impactful innovation, bringing knowledge, skills and capabilities from other sectors to the teams.
  • Ensures the engagement and promotes commitment of the IDS team, leading the way towards the future in close collaboration with the IDS senior leadership.

Essential requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and masters on a related field.
  • Proven decision-making autonomy and accountability
  • More than 5 years of strategic and analytical experience in consulting or strategic projects.
  • Experience in defining strategies and building projects within the pharmaceutical industry or other biomedical stakeholders (leading cross functional teams)
  • Experience in optimizing functional working processes, managing time person matrix and ensuring performance and outcomes.
  • Proven experience in managing budgets and resources.
  • Proven experience applying as is / to be / to do analysis with a systematic mindset.
  • Expert on Roles and Responsibilities definition (i.e., RACI framework)
  • Strong analytical expertise and structured strategic thinking.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset to impact leadership and high emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills.
  • Builds and develop effective cross functional teams.

Desirable requirements

  • Proven strategic experience in setting up strategic projects and working models in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Proven working experience and proficiency in strategy assessment and planning of digital transformation, innovation strategy and business strategy.
  • Updated with the latest trends and best practices in business innovation, including digital strategy, healthcare innovation and data driven decision making.
  • Strong capability in developing governance and monitoring systems, working in high complexity environments with multiple stakeholders
