Is an Industrial Postdoc your next career move?

About the Postdoc Program:

We’re currently looking for talented scientists to join our innovative academic-style Postdoc. From our centre in Macclesfield, UK, you’ll be in a global pharmaceutical environment, contributing to live projects right from the start. You’ll take part in a comprehensive training programme, including a focus on drug discovery and development, given access to our existing Postdoctoral research, and encouraged to pursue your own independent research in cutting edge laboratories. It’s a newly expanding programme spanning a range of therapeutic areas across a wide range of disciplines.

What’s more, you’ll have the support of a leading academic advisor, who’ll provide you with the guidance and knowledge you need to develop your career. This is an exciting area that hasn’t been explored to its full potential, making this an opportunity to make a real difference to the future of medical science.

About the Opportunity:

We have an exciting three-year opportunity for a postdoc working within AstraZeneca’s Chemical Development organisation located in Macclesfield, United Kingdom. The Macclesfield site houses the global teams and facilities for flow chemistry, catalysis, process safety and process analytical testing (PAT). In addition, we boast state-of-the-art equipment for all synthetic and analytical requirements. With exposure to the large-scale lab and pilot plant on site, there is also opportunity to experience developing a process and see it transition from lab to manufacture. The post-doctoral fellow will benefit from excellent in-house expertise as well as academic expertise in the field.

Why is this project important? Amide bonds are found in 25% of marketed pharmaceuticals. Despite this, more sustainable and cost effect methods are sought for this bond formation. The successful candidate will therefore be responsible for developing continuous catalytic amide bond formations to address this unmet need. This is a high impact area and the candidate will work closely with 2 leading academics who are in full support of this project.

Upon success, the methodology will have an immediate impact in the pharmaceutical sector with high impact publications expected. This fantastic position will provide the candidate training in a range of disciplines, including high through experimentation, reaction optimisation, data handling and continuous processing. In addition, the candidate will be accountable for communication of the science internally to multiple groups, but externally also to the wider scientific community. This is your chance to make a meaningful impact in research and enhance your career – and have a great time doing it!

Main Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for ownership of a stand-alone research programme
  • Embed yourself in the industrial environment – understanding key scientific challenges that AstraZeneca Chem Development are engaged with
  • Effectively present results (internally and externally)
  • Proactive engagement with academic supervisor
  • Collaborate with computational chemistry team and AI integration, contributing to development of the predictive catalyst modelling tool

Essential Education and Experience:

  • PhD in synthetic chemistry or equivalent
  • Strong synthetic theory background
  • Solid experience in data handling
  • Good track record of publications in peer review journals.
  • Experience in optimisation of chemical reactions

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Basic programming
  • Flow Chemistry experience
  • DOE understanding is also advantageous but further training will be given.

This is a 3-year programme.  2 years will be a Fixed Term Contract, with a 1 year extension which will be merit based.  The role will be based in Macclesfield, UK, with a competitive salary on offer
