What will you be doing?

Pharmaceutical Sciences is a function within the AstraZeneca’s Biopharmaceuticals R&D unit and that creates innovative, cost effect solutions by transforming molecules into investigative medicines meeting unmet needs of future patients. The function has several departments including Early Chemical Development (ECD) and Advanced Drug Delivery (ADD).

The ECD department’s responsibilities span from early engagement with Discovery Chemistry groups to manufacture of Phase II Clinical material, and its key skill areas include Analytical Chemistry, Crystallisation, Isotope Chemistry, Large-Scale Laboratory (Kilo-Lab) Manufacturing, Process Chemistry, Process Design, Process Engineering, Route Design, Particle and Separation Science.

In ECD, an exciting opportunity has arisen to support the crystallisation group in their day-to-day activities around process development and increasing our efficiency to isolate the right chemicals with the right physical attributes (i.e. solid form and particle properties).

As a member of this group, you will gain a lot of understanding around drug substance and how Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) are made from route design, process design and through production. You will also get exposed to the impacts of API quality to drug product (e.g. tablets).

The role is based at the Macclesfield Campus, Cheshire. The role is primarily laboratory based.

What are we looking for?

AstraZeneca are looking to appoint students enrolled on the Royal Society of Chemistry Broadening Horizons programme. Enthusiasm, integrity and a sense of fun are key to this role, as well as the ability to work as part of a team! You should be curious about industrial chemistry and passionate about using groundbreaking science to develop and deliver medicines which make a difference to patients’ lives. You should also have a good academic background and be prepared to apply your knowledge of pharmacy and the patient in a practical way.

This role is aimed at students who are interested in gaining practical work experience, developing their understanding of the pharmaceutical industry, building a network and seeing where their skills may align with a future career within the pharmaceutical industry. .

What can we offer you?

Summer placement position is available at our Macclesfield (Cheshire) site. The Project is available in our Early Chemical Development team. During the (8-12) week placement you will gain a useful insight into the Pharmaceutical industry and the variety of opportunities available to Chemists within our organisation.

Role requirements.

Applications for Summer Placement will be open until 31/03/2023 and you can expect to hear from us by early April. Interviews will be held in mid April and will be virtual. The placements will take place from late June for (8-12) weeks. A salary will be paid.

Applicants must be a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry Broadening Horizons programme and this will be checked during the application process.
