Inhalation Product Development (IPD) sits within Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) to ensure the successful development, launch and commercialization of our portfolio of inhaled drug/device products. It plays a key role in the company’s and PT&D’s strategy to accelerate more new products to patients.

In this role within IPD, you will be in a key leadership position driving the analytical strategy and delivery for complex inhaled drug device combinations, including pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDI), dry powder inhalers (DPI) and innovative, new inhalation devices containing of both synthetic small molecules and complex large molecule drug substances.   Accountable for the analytical strategy and delivery of key project development milestones leading to successful submission, launch and commercial manufacture. Lead a team of 6-8 director reports, with a total of about 80 employees with deep expertise in analytical method development and validation for inhaled products. Accountable for identification and management of a network of external contract research organizations supporting our development programs as well as representing AZ and its science in corresponding consortia.    

This role requires an experienced and motivated leader within pharmaceutical development of inhaled drug/device combination products, who has successfully taken products from early development (FIM) to commercial manufacture.  To be successful, this leader must understand and apply LEAN principles, have a track record of leading analytical and product development, new technology/capability introduction and a forward-thinking influence of pioneering development programs with no precedent to rely on.   It is essential that this leader is experienced working in a complex multi-national environment and can demonstrate global thinking and cultural awareness.   This role will be an active member of the IPD leadership team and have key stakeholder accountabilities across PT&D and PT&D Analytical Sciences Leadership Team (ASLT).  

What you will do:

  • Global leader of analytical sciences function with approximately 80 FTE located across Gothenburg, Sweden, and Durham, NC, sites accountable for a harmonised analytical product delivery and analytical innovation within IPD

  • Accountable for analytical development and control strategy for robust portfolio of complex inhaled drug device combinations.

  • Prioritize and manage resources across global analytical sciences function, ensuring delivery of critical programs and milestones aligned with corporate and functional strategies and scorecards.

  • Develop and implement future focussed, innovative approaches to analytical automation, process analytical technologies, data science, predictive modelling and AI, strategic workforce planning to enable a more agile workforce fit for future portfolio needs.

  • Lean leadership, driving continual improvement in all facets of the analytical sciences value stream including day to day laboratory operations, and championing core  analytical sciences life cycle management process/programs.

  • Core member of IPD LT and extended member for PT&D LT.    Expected to play leadership role in external industry consortia, such as IPAC-RS to manage regulatory advocacy and opportunities to accelerate and simplify registration of pMDI & DPI inhaled products and develop the regulatory framework for novel inhaled biologics.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in scientific field or Bachelors degree with significant experience in global analytical development of inhaled products

  • Mastery of Pharmaceutical Science

  • Leadership experience promoting, motivating and empowering diverse and inclusive culture  to support accomplishment of individual, team and organisational objectives in international teams

  • Significant understanding of the overall drug development and commercialisation process from development and launch, through life cycle management

  • Strong Networking skills across complex, multi-national organization

  • LEAN leadership mindset

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in scientific field

  • Ability to lead cross functional working groups and teams

  • Expert reputation within the business and industry

  • Extensive knowledge of the latest technical and regulatory developments

  • Excellent knowledge of AstraZeneca policies, procedures and guidelines
