Summary of the group:

The Biopharmaceutical Development group is a multi-disciplinary scientific function providing expertise in Process/Analytical/Formulation/Devices Development and Characterization with integrated Bioprocess Engineering, Clinical Manufacturing, and Supply Chain and Logistics operations. The group is also responsible for transferring the processes to different commercial sites in and outside the AstraZeneca organization. BPD group is present in multiple sites including Gaithersburg, MD and Cambridge UK.

The Cell Culture and Fermentation Sciences Group is accountable for cell line development, process development, and process characterization. This group assists in the scale up and technical transfer of processes to different clinical and commercial sites and also supports manufacturing deviations and regulatory submissions as needed.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimize mammalian cell culture seed train, bioreactor process, and process technology including PAT
  • Develop and improve cell culture media and nutrient feed
  • Design of experiment and statistical analysis of data. Demonstrate scientific rigor in assessing own data and that of others.
  • Support technology transfer to clinical and commercial manufacturing sites including CMO.
  • Authoring and review development reports and contribute to regulatory filings such as IND and BLA

Education & Experience Requirements:

PhD degree in Biochemical/Chemical Engineering or a related field with 0-3 years of experience.                 

Required Skills:

  • Experience in cell culture and bioreactor operation
  • Solid understanding of biochemical engineering concepts and biochemical pathways
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (or related) programs
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills including proven technical writing skills are required. Position may require weekend work.              

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of design of experiment (DOE)
  • Analysis of data using statistical analysis software such as JMP
  • Experience using ambr or similar high throughput tools
