This is a 3-year programme, with an initial 2-year period and 1-year, merit-based extension.
About the Opportunity:
We are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join our Cell Therapeutics and Viral Technologies team, which sits within AstraZeneca R&D. Our team has broad expertise in cell and gene therapies, with specific expertise in CAR T-cells, Tregs, stem cells, viral technologies, and tissue engineering. Cell therapies are revolutionizing cancer treatment, but expanding the types of cancers that can be targeted by cell therapies require that these therapies can definitively differentiate cancer cells from healthy cells. The major focus of this project will be the development of new tools to enable the specific targeting and destruction of cancers with cell therapies. The project will require expertise in stem cell biology, immunology, molecular biology, cell therapies and testing in animal models. We are looking for candidates who have some of these skills and who are committed to learning the additional skills required to enable the successful execution of the project. Our team has approximately 35 members, and we collaborate broadly within Oncology R&D as well as other therapeutic areas within AstraZeneca. The selected candidate will have the full support of the team, as well as access to the broad expertise and excellent facilities at AstraZeneca.
We view the training of the candidate as a high priority output from this project. Including broad support from the team, the candidate will receive mentorship from Dr Mike Doran, Director, and Dr Yasuhiro Ikeda, Senior Director, in the Department of Cell Therapeutics and Viral Technologies. AstraZeneca’s Postdoc’s are encouraged to publish and present their data at conferences; Dr Doran and Ikeda have extensive publication track records and have mentored and supported earlier career researchers who have pursued careers in academia and industry.
Qualification, Skills & Experience
- PhD in immunology/stem cell/cell biology/molecular biology or another relevant field
- Experience with molecular and cellular biology techniques
- Strong track record of first-authored work published in reputable scientific journals
- Willingness to work with mouse models to study human cancer xenografts and cancer cell targeting.
- Strong teammate with the ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Highly motivated for preclinical research in the cell and gene therapy area
- Highly organized in lab notes, experiments, and data
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Hands-on experience in stem cell differentiation and immunology
- In vivo study experience
