About the Opportunity

Working with Dr. Luis Santos, Associate Principal Scientist in Drug Delivery, Dr Yasuhiro Ikeda, Senior Director of Cell Therapy in Biologics engineering, at AstraZeneca, and Dr. Christopher Rhodes, Vice President you will drive technology innovation and design of novel biomaterial capsules for cell encapsulation to address unmet medical needs.

Applying innovative technologies, including but not limited to microencapsulation of cells and automation, you’ll explore how to improve the design of biomaterial capsules with improved mechanical and physical properties to make implantable cell factories addressing chronic diseases.

You will be embedded in a well-integrated, cross functional and collaborative team of drug delivery, cell biology, automation and data scientists, and disease model experts to drive innovation and strengthen AZ leadership in cell therapies. You will collaborate with outstanding scientists from across the organization and get exposed to special science and technological innovation.

Qualification, Skills & Experience

Required:

  • PhD in Biomedical Engineering

  • Proficient in Biomaterials design, microencapsulation technologies for cell encapsulation

  • Hands on experience with biomaterials design, conjugation, peptides, and understanding of polymer chemistry

  • Keen to learn new analytical and innovative biophysical technologies to drive understanding of biomaterials design for encapsulation of cells

  • Skilled in cell culture, and basic understanding of automation, 3D printing, and DOE

  • Good networking, collaboration and teamworking skills

  • Highly organized

  • Ability to find opportunities, learn, and implement new technologies and science

Desirable:

  • Enthusiasm to use automation tools to facilitate high throughput screening of microcapsule properties and cell interactions and identify lead candidates

  • Sound understanding of analytical and biophysical characterization tools to aid on understanding of capsule design (e.g. Rheology, confocal microscopy, ELISA, SEM)

  • Prior experience of working on cross-disciplinary/ global project teams.

  • Strong publication record.
