We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Sustainability Manager to join AstraZeneca (AZ) Supply Biologics. AstraZeneca’s Supply Biologics includes 5 manufacturing sites and global technology operations that support AZ’s portfolio of large molecule medicines. You will play a critical role in driving improvement initiatives, reducing environmental impacts, and fostering the adoption of sustainable practices within our region. The ideal candidate will have expertise and/or passion in life cycle analyses, new medicine modalities, and working across the value chain. These skills will be essential in identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing strategies to enhance our environmental performance. The position requires a minimum of eight years total experience either in sustainability or in roles such as production, research and development (R&D), facilities, quality, or similar fields within the pharmaceutical or healthcare sector.
What you’ll do:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive sustainability strategy to mitigate environmental impacts and drive sustainable practices across the organization.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate sustainable practices into development, manufacturing, and supply chain.
- Guide the implementation of sustainable packaging solutions, waste reduction programs, energy efficiency measures, and water conservation initiatives.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders to manage key performance indicators (KPIs) and track progress towards sustainability goals.
- Raise capabilities and competency across the organization to deepen individual sustainability ownership and accountability
- Engage externally to bring best practice technology for solutions within the organization
- Report and communicate progress to business leadership
- Ensure that sustainability improvements are reaching their maximum impact through regular on-site presence and process confirmation
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or a related field. A master's degree is a plus.
- Minimum of eight years total experience either in sustainability or in roles such as production, research and development (R&D), facilities, quality, or similar fields within the pharmaceutical or healthcare sector.
- Track record of successfully developing and implementing strategies and initiatives
- Excellent project management skills, including prioritization, timeline management, and budget adherence
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations and emerging sustainability trends in the pharmaceutical sector.
- Proficient in analyzing complex data sets related to sustainability performance forecasting
- Proven communicator who works effectively across the organization and externally to achieve outcomes. Forward-thinking mindset, passion, and learning acumen to adapt to evolving sustainability challenges and opportunities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with circular economy principles and strategies for promoting resource efficiency and waste reduction with a passion in life cycle analyses (LCAs) and applying sustainable principles to new medicine modalities.
- Knowledge of sustainable supply chain management, including responsible sourcing and supplier engagement.
- Understanding of environmental justice and social equity issues, integrating them into sustainability practices.
- Experience in quantifying and reporting greenhouse gas emissions and developing strategies for carbon neutrality or net-zero emissions.
- Familiarity with sustainability frameworks and initiatives, such as: ISO 14001, GRI, LEED, Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
