The Data Science & AI (DS&AI) team collaborates across R&D to drive innovation through data science and AI. Together we aim to:

  • Improve our understanding of disease and uncovering new targets
  • Transform R&D processes
  • Speed the design and delivery of new medicines for patients

The newly formed R&D Data Science Learning & Development function will uplift the level of data science capabilities across R&D, ensuring that all can benefit from a centralized approach to these critical areas. The team will focus on both senior leaders and  project teams  to ensure strong partnership, capability development for solid data science foundations, DS&AI learning opportunities and extending Data Science communities for knowledge sharing, ideation and social learning.

As part of the R&D Data Science Learning & Development team, the Data Science Capability Development Associate Director will be an integral part of the team ensuring the long-term success of data science at AstraZeneca. The role holder will be responsible for developing and maintaining the capability foundations for R&D data science. This role will operate in tight collaboration with all functions that have an investment in data science, working with R&D Data Science Leaders, creating and building from existing networks, communities, student and scholar programmes, and job family management. The goal is to provide a rich harmonized environment for our data scientists to flourish.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with R&D data science leaders, develop and implement a strategy for data science community building in R&D
  • Maintain, extend and evolve data science communities to fit the needs of R&D data scientists for knowledge sharing, ideation and social learning
  • Assess the status of data science community, and from this baseline monitor progress against targets
  • Support R&D data science leaders and practitioner communities with innovative collaboration tools and methods derived from industry best-practice
  • Lead (bi-) annual Data Science symposium programme development. Manage associated budget.
  • Develop programme of external Data Science speakers with a focus on areas of emerging and strategic importance
  • Provide a focal point for DS&AI student & scholar projects and schemes, raising these opportunities to R&D data science leaders in each region 
  • Facilitate knowledge capture and sharing on AI company engagements and evaluations
  • Develop strong connections across R&D and capability functions including IT and ‘spoke’ data science teams

Essential Requirements

  • BSc in a Life Science, Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • Expertise in data science methods and application (e.g. data mining, visual analytics, machine learning).
  • Experience of working in a complex global organisation
  • Experience of influencing and gaining commitment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Passion for connecting individuals to achieve common goals
