AstraZeneca’s vision in Oncology is to help patients by redefining the cancer-treatment paradigm, with the aim of bringing six new cancer medicines to patients between 2013 and 2020. A broad pipeline of next-generation medicines is focused principally on four disease areas - breast, ovarian, lung and hematological cancers. As well as other tumor types, these are being targeted through five key platforms - immunotherapy, the genetic drivers of cancer and resistance, DNA damage repair, HER2 and antibody drug conjugates, underpinned by personalized healthcare and biomarker technologies.

The Business and Operations Lead will support the ‘Evidence Generation and External Alliances function within Global Medical Affairs to manage financial budgets. This role would be accountable for all systems support for evidence generation activities, aligned by TA. This role would also be responsible for the quality and accuracy of financial and business data in the key AZ systems to enable teams to make effective business decisions.

The Business and Operations Lead applies specialist knowledge utilizing key financial and study systems to support a consistent approach to gaining a holistic view across budget and FTEs.  This role will analyze and report out impacts to evidence generation activity resource, timelines and costs, including implications and variance from baseline.   

Responsible for the implementation and sharing of continuous improvement activities and ensuring efficiency improvements are embedded as best practice with key systems as appropriate.

The AstraZeneca Global Medical Affairs organization is currently amidst a critical transformation effort to develop a world-class Medical network and lead the company to scientific leadership, with an increased focus on specialty care. Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a point of contact between management and stakeholders for all budget and system related questions, within GMA, the Medical Network and broader AZ.
  • Managing the project plan
    • Maintenance of Study Progression (flagging when studies should be initiated)
    • Managing study project plans (costs, resource forecasts & generation of study numbers)
    • Project specific report requests and scenario planning for investment decisions.
  • Understand financial and planning systems and processes and ability to coordinate project-level budget/resource estimates and manage actual vs. plan
  • Responsible for collaboration with relevant GMA stakeholders and Project Leaders in identifying and disseminating cross-project learning from review of data at plan generation, replanning, option planning and project closure. To attend project closure meetings and support PM’s in information sharing.
  • Monitoring compliance and quality of the study data and ensuring that activity durations and resource forecasts are consistent with targets, completion of milestone dates etc.  This will include identification, sharing and leveraging of good practice to achieve improvement and providing reports for cross-functional review of progress
  • Provide expertise in best practice and support projects on appropriate best practice for scenario planning, resource levelling and scheduling and budget impact. Advise on best practice for accessing and interpreting data and ensure this accumulated expertise is maintained and documented within the department
  • Being actively involved in review and development of short & long-term strategy in area of accountability and maintaining an up-to-date understanding of all developments which may affect the organization’s operations and policies and proactively advising customers of all relevant matters to achieve business requirements and objectives
  • Driving financial performance and business activity, to deliver and communicate performance and business planning reports, and to advise senior management on key drivers and inform the Medical Planning process.
  • Having joint accountability with the business for the accuracy of forecasts and, using a good understanding of the business model and financial drivers, to challenge and influence the key cost drivers.
  • Highlighting sensitivities & risks and delivering timely, accurate and granular reporting and commentary of global performance, linking business drivers to actual spend and forecast
  • Working closely with project and study managers to model and plan for volatile cost and resource demands
  • Manage reconciliation of budget using planned vs. actual spend in conjunction with the study leader to ensure budget targets are being met

Essential Requirements

  • Small and large company experience
  • Excellent proficiency in key Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues at all levels in various geographies
  • Strong work ethics and high integrity standards
  • University degree (or equivalent) preferred
  • Project Management knowledge and experience
  • Demonstrated ability to interrogate, understand and apply project management data
  • Demonstrated proficiency at working with IT systems
  • 3- 5 years experience from within the pharmaceutical industry or similar large multinational organization
  • High level knowledge/awareness of the overall pharmaceutical product development process, including stages of development and role of different functional areas.
  • Experience in working on a cross functional team in a matrix organization
