Summary of the group:

Bioprocess Technology and Engineering (BTE), part of Biopharmaceutical Development (BPD), is responsible for providing engineering and technology solutions to support next generation manufacturing (NGM), process scaling, and advanced process control to development and manufacturing.  Members of the BTE team work closely with process development groups (located in the US and UK) and manufacturing groups to provide process engineering and technology solutions across all stages of process development.  This position provides support to downstream process engineering, technology development and automation implementation.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and operate prototypes for new pieces of lab equipment. Prototypes can be assembled from existing components.
  • Perform experiments and/or modeling simulations to demonstrate process engineering solutions.
  • Develop automation methods that control the entire manufacturing process at lab and pilot scales.
  • Make observations, analyze data and interpret results.
  • Maintain accurate records of experimental results, review, analysis, and interpretation of experimental data.
  • Make periodic presentations in group meetings, project team meetings, and in one-on-one situations.
  • Work with matrix teams (BPD, Engineering, Automation, Manufacturing, Validation, and Quality) to evaluate, design, develop, and implement new equipment, process technologies, PAT, predictive process scaling, or advanced process controls across laboratory and pilot scales to support next generation manufacturing or platform processes for upstream or downstream bioprocess unit operations.

Education & Experience Requirements:

Senior Automation & Robotics Engineer (Senior Scientist): requires a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering or related fields with 0-5 years of relevant industrial experience or a Master’s Degree with 7+ years of relevant industrial experience or Bachelor’s Degree with 10+ years of relevant industrial experience.

Automation & Robotics Engineer (Scientist): requires a Bachelor's Degree with 5-12 years of relevant industrial experience or a Master's Degree with 2-10 years of relevant industrial experience.

Required Skills:

Senior Scientist

  • Highly team-oriented, energetic, critical thinker, organized, capable of significant multitasking with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of process control and automation.
  • Skilled in root cause analysis and problem-solving with limited data.
  • Skilled in conducting empirical studies.
  • Skilled in effectively explaining complex scientific or engineering concepts to a broader, diverse, cross-functional audience.
  • Demonstrated experience with process, equipment, or automation design
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Scientist

  • Highly team-oriented, energetic, critical thinker, organized, capable of significant multitasking with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Familiar with process control and automation.
  • Skilled in root cause analysis and problem-solving with limited data.
  • Understanding of how to conduct empirical studies.
  • Skilled in effectively explaining complex scientific or engineering concepts to a broader, diverse, cross-functional audience.
  • Demonstrated experience with process, equipment, or automation design
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with robotics competition, such as FIRST Robotics competition.
  • Robotic design and programming.
  • Experience with data and statistical analysis. Statistical design of experiments (DOE).
  • Experience with Arduino assembly or similar and software to automate lab equipment. Automation skills.
  • Protein chemistry; protein and analytical chemistry, process robustness concepts and process scale-up.
  • Proficiency in protein purification principles and methods including (but not limited to) different modes of chromatography, viral removal/inactivation steps and filtration.
  • Purification process design.
  • AKTA systems/software.
