The Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) team is accountable for all Infrastructure, Security, IT Operations and all End User Services and technologies. The role holder will act as the Software Engineering Lead for the Companion mobile app(s) and desktop application(s) stack.

The key partners for this role are the Service Manager, Application Support Team, System Owners/FM Service Leads, Campus Managers or Site IT Leads, Scrum Master, other support teams (internal & external) and project delivery teams.

The Software Engineering Lead will report into the capability area lead and will provide:

· Support to the development team in 3rd line support activities and active involvement in identifying root cause issues

· Be the technical SME for the Companion application stack

· Be the technical driving force behind the development team and implementing new ways of working to create a more effective development capability

· Technical expertise/direction on future development activities

High quality communication with the Scrum Master to ensure good time to delivery of new features as well as support to the Service Manager

Follow and adhere to the AZ Enterprise Architecture tools and processes for back-end integration and infrastructure

· The Software Engineering Lead should be very strong in at least one domain e.g. Front/Back-end and should have knowledge of the opposite domain

· Responsibility for the development and direction of the development domain that the Software Engineering Lead is strongest in

· Responsibility over implementation and design of secure and protected solutions

· Proactively identify improvement areas for the back-end and front-end setup

· Designing solutions for the Enterprise and scalability

· Ensuring an API-led approach in application design

· Following reference architectures for API led approach design and adhering to standards set out for Enterprise cloud development

· Responsible for reviewing the junior developers documentation and ensuring consistency across the DevOps team

· Collaborate with developers from both domains and ensure good technical working practices are in place

· Keep current with the latest changes in the DevOps world and best ways for development

· Interpret requirements and deliver based on user stories

· The Software Engineering Lead will adhere and promote the use of AstraZeneca’s Software Development Lifecycle methodology and practices, and will be familiar with applications/infrastructure that their solutions

will impact.

· Identify issues with current processes and provide input on proposed changes to enhance effectiveness of IT

· Provides technical expertise to project and IT change implementation teams working on the development, configuration, testing, release, maintenance, and improvement of IT applications, and/or designs

· Provides input into business cases, Request for Proposals, supplier selection, and design thinking workshops

· Involvement in design, change management, service, development, deployment, CI/CD and challenging current toolsets/coding practices

· Mentoring and coaching more junior developers in the team to bring them up to the development standard shown by the Software Engineering Lead


Education, Qualifications, and Experience


  • Degree level education in computer science or similar · Significant experience (6+ years) in an Information Services/Information Technology environment with good business acumen
  • · Experience with Java 1.8+/EE
  • · SQL Experience and knowledge
  • · Knowledge of automated testing and CI/CD tools e.g.
  • JUnit, GIT, Ant, Maven, Jenkins, SonarQube, Docker
  • · Experience of working in an Agile application development model and team
  • · Appreciation of Integration & APIs - MuleSoft & Snap Logic
  • MuleSoft for developers and AnyPoint Platform experience (if strong in back-end)
  • · Expertise in Web and Mobile Application Engineering
  • · Expertise in application design patterns and processes
  • · Ionic Framework mobile application experience (if strong in front-end)
  • · AngularJS 8+ experience (if strong in front-end)
  • · NodeJS 10.x+ (if strong in front-end)
  • · JavaScript version ES6+ (if strong in front-end)
  • · Typescript 2.3.3 (if strong in front-end)


  • Knowledge and/or experience of RAML, MUnit, Ping SSo, NoSQL e.g. MongoDB
  • · Knowledge of ALM tools Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, ServiceNow
