Experienced Bioinformatician, Target Identification and Target Validation

Location Cambridge, England, United Kingdom Job ID R-098550 Date posted 02/06/2021

Are you a curious Bioinformatician looking for an exciting new challenge? Join a place with an ambitious and collaborative culture, where you’ll feel valued, energised and rewarded for your ideas and contributions.

At AstraZeneca, innovation is more than just research. As one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies, we’re passionate about providing medicines that make a real difference in patient care.

You’ll join our Data Sciences & Quantitative Biology team, where you will play a pivotal role in computational support for drug target identification and validation. You will get the opportunity to perform analysis and understanding of data to provide and prioritise hypotheses for oncology drug targets. These data come from a variety of sources, including in-house functional genomics screening such as chemical compound, fragment-based screening and CRISPR experiments, or in silico methods such as knowledge-graph inferences and genomics data research.

Development of screening data analysis pipelines is part of your responsibilities, as well as methods for annotating, triaging and prioritising drug targets using both in-house and publicly available data sets.

You will join a multi-disciplinary collaborative team of data scientists and researchers in preclinical drug discovery, working in close partnership with other data scientists, lab scientists and biologists to deliver improvements to AstraZeneca’s preclinical target pipeline.

What you'll do

Collaboration is key in this role, and you will partner with experimentalists, bioinformaticians and other data scientists to explore and analyse data relating to target identification and validation. Together, you’ll ensure high quality drug target hypotheses, scientific excellence and reproducibility in the related tools, processes and results.

We will also rely on you to:

  • Prototype and implement analytical processes for the management, processing and analysis of proprietary target screening data and publicly available data sets, to derive insights and target hypotheses

  • Contribute to data management within the target identification and validation area

  • Contribute more broadly to our evolving in-silico target identification and validation approaches, via collaborative partnering both within our department and with other data science colleagues in other departments

Essential for the role

You have a first degree in bioinformatics, computer sciences, biology, biochemistry or other relevant field. This is complemented with subsequent training in bioinformatics. Furthermore, you hold a PhD or equivalent PostDoc or industrial experience in bioinformatics or a related computational subject area.

Your interpersonal and collaborative skills are phenomenal and you have a proven track record to partner across specialist fields and locations.

You also have:

  • Experience in biological research concepts, and data and information types and analytical approaches sought at deriving insights from them (e.g. pathway enrichment)

  • Experience with relevant computational tools such as R, Python and database technologies

We truly believe that everyone contributes with a unique set of competence. Your curiosity and passion for personal development combined with support from colleagues, mentors and leaders, will ensure you maximise your potential and contribution, building from your current skills, abilities and experience.

Desirable experiences

  • Knowledge and experiences of biological assays, molecular drug target assessment and CRISPR technology.

  • Knowledge and experience in phenotypic screening with chemical compounds, functional fragments and arrayed/pooled CRISPR methods.

  • Knowledge and experience in biochemistry and molecular biology,

  • Experience in analysis of genomics, proteomics and other -omics data.

  • Experience in exploration, extraction, integration and analysis of data and information from publicly available databases (e.g. Pharos, Open Targets).

Why AstraZeneca?
