Job Description

This is an exciting global senior director leadership role as the Head of Imaging, AI and Data Analytics (IAD) within Clinical Pharmacology and Safety Sciences (CPSS) at AstraZeneca. The successful candidate will bring excellent scientific expertise and leadership to develop and deliver a strategic vision that will drive innovation in applied artificial intelligence and data analytics for CPSS. The IAD organisation with 20 data scientists plus imaging specialists collaborates with the toxicology, pathology, systems- and clinical pharmacology functions in CPSS and works closely with the Data Science and AI hub in R&D. The head of IAD will be a member of the CPSS leadership team and guide the organisation in embracing a digital culture. Collaboration with partners across AstraZeneca R&D and IT will be essential for the success along with a strong external network.

Accountabilities

  • Provide scientific mentorship and advice in the application of advanced analytics to address questions related to safety, imaging and systems pharmacology.
  • Use machine learning, natural language processing, and graph analysis to solve modelling and ranking problems across research and development
  • Develop strategies and evaluate potential improvements, prototype, validate, and productionize these strategies
  • Use Big Data technologies such as Hadoop and Spark to build large scale data mining pipelines
  • Lead and direct a large, cross-skilled department of imaging scientists, data scientists, and informaticians focusing on increasing the impact of data & AI across CPSS
  • Champion publication of imaging and data science in high quality and high impact journals
  • Maintain a wide set of collaborative relationships, both inside and outside the company, including academic institutions, external specialists and regulators
  • Build a stimulating, inspiring and exciting environment for scientists which allows them to develop their careers in a variety of directions
  • Ensure that resource and expertise are appropriately deployed to provide maximal impact to the business across multiple areas
  • Be an ambassador for new ways of working and proactively seek academic collaborations, graduate recruitment, internships, secondments and opportunities for lifelong learning
  • Maintain strong connections with the R&D Data Science & AI function and serve on data science & AI governance groups and technical/decision making bodies as required

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant computational field with experience in machine learning and data analytics tools such as R, python or equivalent.
  • Experience in a wider range of machine learning techniques such as RNN, CNN and deep learning and their application to real world problems
  • Proficiency in the use of deep learning engines
  • Substantial experience with structured and unstructured data sources, especially in areas such as genomics, imaging and text data
  • Proven track record of innovation in creating novel algorithms and advancing the state of the art
  • Motivational leader with experience of leading teams and working in a cross functional matrix
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically & internationally
  • Understanding of drug discovery and development

  • Experience of working in industry / life sciences
  • Experience in creating a digital culture in an organisation
  • Experience in delivering a vision and executing a strategic plan for an organisation
